*~* Sleep Apnea *~* Hey,Hey,Paula

I have an appointment tomorrow night to go to the hospital to spend the night and participate in a Sleep Study to see if I have Sleep Apnea. I did some research on this topic and found the following description. I was just wondering if anyone has this condition and what your experiences have been?

Thanks in advance!

Paula

SLEEP APNEA DEFINED

The Greek word "apnea" literally means "without breath." There are three types of apnea: obstructive, central, and mixed; of the three, obstructive is the most common. Despite the difference in the root cause of each type, in all three, people with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times during the night and often for a minute or longer.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the rear of the throat collapses and closes during sleep. In central sleep apnea, the airway is not blocked but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe. Mixed apnea, as the name implies, is a combination of the two. With each apnea event, the brain briefly arouses people with sleep apnea in order for them to resume breathing, but consequently sleep is extremely fragmented and of poor quality.

Sleep apnea is very common, as common as adult diabetes, and affects more than twelve million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. Risk factors include being male, overweight, and over the age of forty, but sleep apnea can strike anyone at any age, even children. Yet still because of the lack of awareness by the public and healthcare professionals, the vast majority remain undiagnosed and therefore untreated, despite the fact that this serious disorder can have significant consequences.

Untreated, sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, impotency, and headaches. Moreover, untreated sleep apnea may be responsible for job impairment and motor vehicle crashes. Fortunately, sleep apnea can be diagnosed and treated. Several treatment options exist, and research into additional options continues.

Date: 3/3/2003 9:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 23075    I have sleep apnea but my stay involved three nights at a sleep disorder center...
Date: 3/3/2003 9:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 49742    I was told by a couple of doctors that I have it but I never was treated for it. I have been suffering from it for a few years now. I hope your stay at the hospital helps you through this and everything goes well and they find nothing seriously wrong with you. Keep me posted on what you find out. I know I never really get much sleep because of it and I suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome as well. I don't like driving because I may find myself dosing off because of lack of sleep.

Date: 3/3/2003 9:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53961    Thank you Angel. A couple people I know have it and wear the mask at night.
Date: 3/4/2003 4:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 23075    Paula .... no I don't do anything for it my hubbyis a EMT he is a fairly light sleeper so as soon as he hears anyinterupption in my breathing pattern then he usually wakes me up.
Date: 3/4/2003 4:49:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    I have severe sleep apnea. I was diagnosed several years ago. I quit breating 87 times per minute from 10 seconds to 2 and one half minutes per hour. I was put on 2 liters of oxygen first and then I was put on a C-Pap machine but it did not work. (Once a lady tried to help me in the hospital by placing a pillow over my face but the nurses caught her and put her in a psych ward as my snoring was loud.) The next step was a surgery to fix my deviated septum, remove ny uvela, remove my tonsils, adnoids and widen my air passage way a put a temporary trach in. The surgery went wrong as they found my thyroid messed up and the trach turned into being permanent. I now am on 6-liters of continuous oxygen but for COPD. You can have a heart attack from sleep apnea and you are always tired. My dogs even now will nudge me when I quit breathing. So I wish you luck. My son also has apnea but won't wear his C-PAP as it is the ugliest and uncomfortable head gear.
Date: 3/4/2003 6:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 53478    My fiance's brother just did a Sleep Study on Friday night for Sleep Apnea. The nurse woke him up in the morning very concerned. I guess his heart stopped over 30 times and each time it was for at least 1 minute, sometimes over 2 minutes.
Date: 3/4/2003 6:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 53478    Good luck though. From what I heard it's not fun getting the glue out of your hair...LOL! Let us know how it turns out. *hugs*
Date: 3/4/2003 11:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 16671    If you have sleep apnea, you usually know it. I have it and I hate it. It seems to come on the nights that I'm the most tired. Just as I'm falling off to sleep, I just stop breathing and I dont know it until a little while a min or so later, when I come awake gasping for a breath. I'm always tired, seems like I never get any quality sleep. I too like penny have underlying copd, but Im not on oxygen, I do take predisone to help with my breathing during the day but hate to take a dose too close to night time as it sure doesnt help my insominia. I have to be carefull of what meds I might take that will make me groggy as they too can bring on worse bouts of sleep apnea, but heck if a person is going to go, I'd rather go in my sleep.
Date: 3/4/2003 1:09:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53961    Sheesh! Doesn't sound like fun. I guess tonight will tell... Take care you who suffer with this and other health afflictions. And to boot, these are not things we can prevent... Just happens to some.
Date: 3/4/2003 2:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 18516    My mother has it and she had to do a sleep study..they gave her a C Pap (I don't know if I'm spelling it right) machine..which is nothing more than a breathing machine that she sleeps with at night.
Date: 3/4/2003 3:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    Lemon, does she use it or does she detest the mask?
Date: 3/4/2003 9:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 18516    Penny, she'll wear it sometimes..her room is right next to mine and when I sleep in my room and she starts snoring I tell her to put her mask on and she'll do it. Actually the mask really doesn't bother her..and the machine doesn't make loud noises like some people think..it's really quiet.
Date: 3/5/2003 1:19:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53961    Well, I made it through the test. Now I have to wait two weeks to find out the results. Now, I need a nap...
Date: 3/5/2003 1:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    I think it was the air pressure and the mask drying out our eyes. I gave mine a shot but it didn't work as I still snored with it. My son complains about the air pressure hurting his eyes too. Still, it's better than having to have a trach. Keep us informed Paula. God Bless and hope it's a light case.
