Popular USMERS (That is...popular outside of USM) -- Mike

American society seems to be under the illusion that if you use computers you cannot possibly be an outgoing, social, popular person. If this assertion is incorrect, let us know. Are you popular? Just how popular are you? And do you think this "everyone who uses computers must be a nerd" thing is largely another American stereotype? For the record, I am unpopular, due to social anxiety problems, which really sucks, because I'm a nice, likeable guy, I could have been popular. Well, atleast things can change. :) Enough about me, how about you?

Date: 3/3/2003 8:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 30986    It's incorrect. I have a life, that's why I'm not here so much, LOL! I have family and friends, I think I'm a well liked person offline as well as on.
Date: 3/3/2003 8:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    I use to be when i was in high school....knew everyone liked by everyone, involved in sports for four years....*track freshman year, diving sophomore through senior year* I was actually told on graduation night that I was as liked as much as I was because I didn't realize just how popular I WAS...so they liked that it didn't go to my head so to speak.....now that I've moved on to college....I'm one big loner LOL
Date: 3/3/2003 8:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 45619    who cares if you're popular? popularity is wayyyyy overrated! and i'm not saying this bc i'm not considered "popular" i am saying it bc i hate cliques. i hate the way they hurt people, and how they judge people. and it's not just the popular people either, it's everyone. i'm glad im not in the popular group tho bc i wouldn't want to be on display all the time. i don't want other people to decide what is cool for me to do. so no, i'm not popular, and i don't want to be. but i'm not a "nerd" either if you will, but i do spend a lot of time on the computer.
Date: 3/3/2003 8:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 59418    lol i'm not amazingly popular, but i have 4 or 5 close friends..metal princess
Date: 3/3/2003 8:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 56381    I have a life and considered in the popular group in school, and Im on the computer 24/7 so thats totaly not true xoxo,
Date: 3/3/2003 9:00:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13886    Thanks for commenting everyone, this is interesting.
Date: 3/3/2003 9:00:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13886    I agree with you there Angel.
Date: 3/3/2003 9:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 13546    Yet again another misconception about people "being on the internet". I'm not "the most popular" person, but I am social, I like to go out, and hang around with my friends. I have a close knit group with whom I spend most of my time with. So I am not "popular" per say, but I do have a life off of the net.
Date: 3/3/2003 9:14:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13886    Well, thats one good thing I guess, I rarely go on the internet anymore, I used to be addicted. Just an hour or two a day usually for me.
Date: 3/3/2003 9:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 48689    Yup. I am popular. At least, I hope so
Date: 3/3/2003 9:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 55970    Eh...not really. People usually think I'm a freak, which I won't deny I'm usually fairly quiet at school, depending on who I'm with. *shrugs* ~Tara~
Date: 3/3/2003 9:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    that was started in the mid-80's when you had to be very computer savy just to turn the thing on and work on DOS i don't think very many of us know how to run programs off disks and in dos it IS a lost skill... and when computers were very scary things what you were paranoid to do the wrong thing it would blow up on you... Bull gates screams the computer geek stereotype but he also did the 1 think what had killed it.. he created USER FRIENDLY computers(windows!)
Date: 3/3/2003 9:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 55970    But I would in no way say that I'm popular..because I'm not LOL. Not at school, and not here at USM, at least I don't think so :-\ Hmmm... ~Tara~
Date: 3/3/2003 9:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 14464    I'm not very popular because I am shy and well like other people say I'm a freak. And I think the nerd thing is wrong.
Date: 3/3/2003 10:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 58642    Ech...popularity. I honestly have no respect for any of the popular people at my school. They're all a bunch of talkative, idiots. And dealing with them is like Braveheart all over again, it seems like they make the rules and they tell people what's cool and whats not and they bag on you if you don't do what they say. It's horrible, especially the way some people are being treated at school. At my school they're a disease trying to infect everyone. Or at least that's the way alot of people see it. Dasvedanya.
Date: 3/3/2003 10:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 59418    Remnant, i agree! They are like that at my school too! metal princess
Date: 3/3/2003 10:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 13609    HA! thats so stupid, not everyone who uses a comp is a nerd..I think i have alot of great friends off the computer..gawd the things they come up with! LOL
Date: 3/3/2003 10:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 13886    I like the really popular people that are well-rounded and willing to except alot of people for who they are. Unfortunately there aren't alot of those. I knew a few back in high school though. With most of them these days you have to be a jock, or a frat, or whatever they're into to be liked by them.
Date: 3/3/2003 11:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 55988    Well, I wouldn't say that I'm "popular" (and most would agree), but I am well-liked by many, not necessarily close to a lot of people though. But I wouldn't consider myself a "nerd" either. But the people at my school who are part of the "popular group" are online quite a lot. So I guess I'm saying that's incorrect. It would have been more accurate about ten years ago when not a lot of people owned computers. ~Alicia
Date: 3/3/2003 11:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 39258    Uhh.. at work everyone knows me. I'm not in school anymore. When I go, I'm usually loud and do anything for a few laughs. I think I'm average when it comes to popularity and whatnot.
Date: 3/4/2003 6:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 60018    Well with a class size of well over 600 it's kind of hard for one person to be the most popular person lol. I have friends from all different groups and can be considered popular at times. My best friend is really popular but my group of friends that I usually hang out with is not. I don't limit myself to certain people because of popularity levels. So over-all it's a nice mix
Date: 3/4/2003 1:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 51070    I'm unpopular at school, because there's nobody I really care to be friends with there; most of the ppl in my school are dumb and shallow. I hate associating with stupid people; they bring me down. I'd rather hang around with someone intelligent and sensitive. I can not stand idiots! Another reason I'm unpopular is because I dress in goth/punk clothes.
Date: 3/4/2003 2:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 61912    Im an anti-social, been one all my life. I use the internet as a crutch for my lack of a social life. Far as popularity goes im assuming your refering to people who are still in shcool, because thats meaningless in the grownup world. I will say this though, I am well liked by everyone at my job, I just dont get out much..........Andy
