Their voice echoes from the well.
Bobby.
The little boy stood on the side of the stone cylinder buried deep in the ground. He didn't know what the well was filled with, but he knew something was down there. And whatever it was knew him.
Bobby had stood on the side of the well every day that summer, when his mother shooed him off to play so she could watch soap operas and talk shows. And everyday rather than play baseball with his friends or catch frogs at the lake he stood on the edge circling the hole to where the dark things were.
Dark things. He had heard the name somewhere before. Probably in one of the horror comics he would read with his flashlight below his superman blankets after his mother would put him to bed.
Bobby. Come play.
He had heard them beckon him like that before. And when they did it was like he could see a little dark hand creep out of the well at him. But he had talked to the dark things and they had to stay in the dark and away from light. They had told Bobby that if he brought them some rope they could come out at night and see him but Bobby couldn't do that. They scared him too much.
Bobby. Jump in Bobby. We'll catch you.
Bobby looked into the darkness and saw nothing, but he could hear their footsteps tapping and splashing a little water (probably from last nights storm).
All at once Bobby heard a screen door slam open and a woman ran out of her house and across the street to the well. Her black hair raced around her dark skin, and her bright blue eyes shone viciously as she approached him waving her arm high above her head.
"What are you doing here! Didn't I tell you to stay away from the well," she yelled.
Dina Davis. He remembered her name as she searched the high grass for the cover. She finally found it and dragged it over to the well.
"Help me lift this boy," she yelled.
"Yes ma'am." he answered.
He went around the other side and they hoisted the cover onto the well, and with one last 'bobby' the voices ceased.
"Didn't I tell you not to come play," Dina yelled.
"Yes Dina, but they talk to me. Even Peter says so," Bobby replied.
"Ah, my boy Peter is away at camp. Are you lonely Bobby? If that's so I can get his older brother to introduce you to the kids in the field and you can play baseball," Dina said offering him her hand.
He took it and replied, "No ma'am, they talk to me."
"Who," Dina asked.
"The people in the well," Bobby said.
"Bobby, you know there are no things in the well. I've told you that Peter just made that up as a story when y'all were out camping," Dina replied.
"Then why do you come out here and talk to them," Bobby asked.
Dina froze.
"Ma'am?"
"How did you know?"
"I Can see you from my window ma'am, each night you go out here and you light a candle and let the wax drip down into the well. Why do you do that?"
"I... well Bobby, you see it's just that."
"And sometimes you tie the top down to the stones. BUt not just with wood ma'am, but with Willow because I see the leaves when it moves."
"What moves?"
"The top. After you leave they move it."
"Bobby, I don't want to talk about this anymore you here me? That well is a bad place and no good little boys should be over there ever, do you here me? Now I want you to come on in to my house and I'll make you a sandwich and you can tell me about what they say."
"Yes Dina."
1811 "Savannah! Savannah," Julietta called.
Julietta ran through the fields in her plain blue dress. She saw the well, cover removed and ran fearing the worst. Had Savannah fallen into the well?
"Savannah," Julietta screamed.
The clearing that surrounded the well was covered in cloth. White cloth. Lace.
Julietta remembered Savannah's communion dress and fell to her knees. She sobbed.
"Savannah," she cried.
Mommy.
She looked up.
"Savannah?"
Mommy. Over here.
Julietta brought herself to her feet.
"Where are you?"
The well mommy. I fell but I'm okay. Throw the roap in the well so I can climb out.
"Hold on Savannah, I'll go get Daddy."
No! Mommy no, the rope is right here. Just tie it to something so I can climb out! Please mommy.
Julietta grabbed the roap and threw an end into the darkness. She tied the other end around her waist and sat by the side of the well.
Is it steady mommy?
"Yes baby."
Okay.
The rope tightened quickly. Julietta barely had time to gasp at the rope ripped through her torso and pulled her lower half into the well. The eerie silence surrounded the clearing was only shattered, when a frightened Savannah came across it later that night after ripping her dress to tatters in a fit of anger.
It was shattered by her scream.
And her fall into the well.
