A St. Joseph, Mo., woman has told a federal court she did not try to make money off the terror events of Sept. 11, 2001. The Kansas City Star reports the 41-year-old is accused by a grand jury of falsifying documents to create a "brother" whom she said died in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. Court papers claim Cassaundrea Montgomery fabricated tax records, credit card bills and even an apartment rental con- tract to try to show that for many years she had been supported by a brother named Jeffery. In the wake of his "death," she had gone around asking charitable groups to help her out because he was no longer supporting her. The grand jury charged Montgomery may have extorted more than $64,000 from a variety of charities using the story about her brother. If convicted on the 10 counts of mail fraud brought against her, she could be sent to prison for 50 years.
This is so wrong and so sad....
