J A N E S V I L L E, Wis.— It was almost curtains for Gizmo the Chihuahua, but a resourceful 911 call saved the day.
Jennifer Gilbert called the emergency line last week, after her pet suddenly began to choke and stopped breathing.
"She called 911 saying that her dog was choking," said Keith Cleasby, a supervisor at the Rock County Communications Center, which received Gilbert's call. There's no established procedure for helping a choking Chihuahua, but dispatcher Kathy Churchill was able to improvise, with the help of her supervisor Jodie Johnson.
"The dispatcher utilized our emergency information cards, which are obviously for people, but it worked on the dog," said Cleasby.
"I just asked her what kind of dog it was," Johnson told the Janesville Gazette. "I just figured a Chihuahua is small — small enough to go to the infant card."
First she instructed Gilbert to give Gizmo a few whacks on the back. At first it didn't seem to help, and Johnson called for a police officer to head to Gilbert's home to help.
"He just spit up something. OK. It was, a… Oh my God…" Gilbert said, according to the 911 transcript of the call.
It turned out that Gizmo had almost been done in by his own kind — almost. The pooch had bitten the nose off his favorite toy, a talking Taco Bell Chihuahua doll.
After explaining what had happened, the tearful owner offered her gratitude.
"Thank you so much," Gilbert said.
"You did a good job," the operator responded.
