PAIN - A gift or a curse? ....................... Lady Nyx

If you put your hand on the burning coil of the stove what happens? Instantly you feel pain and just as quickly, you remove your hand from the burning coil because you can sense the pain and because you are aware of the danger and damage that it is causing. If your hand is burned you quickly remedy it by addressing the injury and attempting to rectify and heal it.

What would happen if you could feel no pain? You would not know that your hand was burning and perhaps you would not quickly remove your hand from the burning coil, further compounding the injury to your hand from a simple first degree burn to a second or third degree burn.

We often wish away our pain and wish that it would simply not exist and yet there is actually a gift in being able to feel pain (both physical and emotional).

Without pain we would have an inability to sense harm or danger. Pain is a warning sign that something is going on that should not be ignored. Without pain, one is unable to know when something is causing damage to themself....whether it be physically, emotionally, or pyschologically. Without pain a small situation can grow into a larger situation.

Without emotional pain we would be unable to feel compassion or empathy for others. Without pain we would become aloof with no emotional objectivity or subjectivity. We could even become almost psychopathic with an inability to express concern for our fellow human beings or remorse for wrong doings we may inflict upon others. We would also be unable to know when damage is being done to our own emotional or spiritual selves.

Pain can be a motivating factor in causing us to make changes in our lives and even to assist others in pain because we understand and can relate to their feelings. Pain, as in the loss of a loved one, also tells us that we are able to love and care about others and can motivate us to appreciate those that we do love and never take them for granted, but rather savor those close ties that we have.

We can mask or deaden our pain in many ways through such methods as alcohol, drugs (recreational or prescription), becoming workaholics, or putting ourselves into a state of denial and becoming hardened or cynical to the pain of others and ourselves.

I see pain as a gift that we have been given to keep us alert to harm, danger, and negativity....and to alert us of the need to take action in alleviating pain in ourselves and others that we see and understand.

We can use pain to motivate us in a positive direction to take positive actions to alleviate the pain and heal the wounds....or we can wallow in the pain and become so enveloped in it until we become so focused upon it that it is all that we see and all that we relate to, refusing to advance past it. We can even get to the point where pain is the only emotion we understand and the only emotion we believe we can relate to. Our reality of ourselves can be one of a person in pain and we may even come to a point where it is our “comfort zone” or our identity of ourself to be constantly pained.

The question is, since we have been gifted to “feel”, what do we do with that gift? Do we use it to grow and learn? Do we use it as a warning sign that action needs to be taken? Or....do we despise the pain and give into a sense of negativity, self pity, and a feeling of hopelessness?

Don’t get me wrong, I believe that there is a time for grieving or sadness and a time for gathering understanding of the pain, its causes, its effects, and then ultimately its remedies.

I for one am thankful to at least be able to feel pain. What I do as a result of it....is my choice and my decision afterwards.

Date: 1/29/2003 10:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 21435    Hello Lady Nyx A fine write up. I to, am grateful to be able to feel pain. But not too much..lol..Ok, Seriously..One of my uncles had diabetes and couldn't feel when he hurt his feet. Poor guy ended up loosing both legs from infection. Emotional pain..Now there's a heavy topic. Sometimes I wonder if it isn't "more painfull" than physical pain. Thanks for the fine read, my friend. Write on...
Date: 1/29/2003 11:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 46527    I absolutely agree with everything in this post, without pain we would be numb to many problems and feelings that we need to experience.
Date: 1/29/2003 12:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 60018    I've actually thought about this before lol. It is possible to not really feel pain through hypnosis and such. I do agree with the fact that feeling pain is needed though.
Date: 1/29/2003 12:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 54247    Cannot remember the name of the old movie - but, the main character had a horrendous disease and after the operation continuous pain. Supposedly, there was a way to operate and remove the ability to feel pain. Even though doctors advised against the operation because pain is always a warning. She insisted and was having a wonderful time at the beach - then out of nowhere there was a large cut on the back of her leg - she was alone and unaware and dancing and happy and died quickly! Movie ended there. Yes, pain has a purpose. RAT
Date: 1/29/2003 12:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    I agree for the most part as we have to have pain so that we can compare the good to in our lives. But sometimes the pain can be so overwelming that we lose our focus and cannot see to go on any farther. I've been there emotionally and physically and accept what gifts the pain can bring. To realize that I am alive, can feel, can learn and know that relief hopefully will come. (but today, the physical pain is tremedous and none of the pain meds are working for I told the doc I didn't want the 'strong' ones yet. What a dummy I was)
Date: 1/29/2003 1:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 24856    What a pain! Nah, not really...LOL. Acutally emotionally there would never be any love songs, poetry, or stories to share if not for pain. One must endure it to be able to express the experiences......and grow with it. Great post Lady Nyx!
Date: 1/29/2003 2:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 30747    Very true. Once again we think alike. *smiles* Without pain you definitely would not know pleasure. (one of my favorite things to say) Oh here's another...Pain builds character. How's that for cliche's huh? hehe. I love the way you think Lady Nyx. You are an inspiration. *hugs*

Date: 1/29/2003 4:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 23963    Wow I never thought of Pain as a gift, but after reading this I feel that pain is a gift. Thank you for sharing and posting this Lady Nyx. Great post! Much love and hugs to you and to ALL!
Date: 1/29/2003 7:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    That reminds me of what I just read about today in a psychology textbook. There was a guy who had a rare disease where he lost all of his sense of touch. He could only get up and walk if he could see what he was doing. If the lights went off he would just fall over, it was so bizaare.
Date: 1/29/2003 7:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    I agree with everything you are saying here hun, I'm thankful also to be able to feel pain and its also my decision afterwards what to do as a result of it...hugs Zema
Date: 1/29/2003 7:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 52563    I'm one of those weird people that love pain. Without pain there is no pleassure. And one you get over the pain, you appreciate pleassure a lot more.
Date: 1/29/2003 9:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 37900    This is a very good post, Lady Nyx. Some qualities are learned only from pain. Too many of us are not willing to wait until it is finished teaching.
Date: 1/30/2003 2:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 23610    Thanks you guys for your replies. Looks like you all have quite a bit of insight on this topic yourselves. I wasn't sure if people were going to think I was crazy for thinking pain could actually be a good thing. LOL.
Date: 1/30/2003 6:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 15997    This post reminds me of that quote..."When you truly know the meaning of the word L-O-V-E you'll also know the meaning of the word P-A-I-N" Even though we all wish that our pain would somehow fade when we're feeling it...it makes us stronger people in the long run and you look back and say "I got through that...I'm stronger than I thought"
Date: 1/30/2003 6:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 15997    BTW great post...I really liked it.
