A university did a study on it deaths per year type thing I believe it was done in 2002: "Today the chronic killers are heart and lung disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. Half of the causes linked to these conditions are behavioral and environmental. Smoking is one (400,000 Americans die annually from tobacco-related illnesses), and alcohol and substance abuse (e.g., more than 110,000 alcohol deaths per year)." SO if this is true it puts tobacco in a major lead....and I actually believe it....smoking is a hard thing to give up *not saying alochol isn't* and ALOT of people feel smoking doesn't impare them.......therefore why stop at two or three cigaretts?......whereas not everyone but a good majority of people have enough sense to know when to quit drinking or not get behind the wheel.... |

Both are not very good for you. I have heard of wrecks caused by someone reaching for or lighting a cig while driving. Or dropping a cig in car or on the person causing something to start smoldering and the fear of a fire getting started have caused crashes. |

Many drunk drivers have caused crashes and death also. So I don't see either one better than the other. |

I think as far as health in general, alcohol, -taken in moderation- would be the lesser "evil". Alcohol, in and of itself (once again, taken in moderation), isn't really bad and doesn't hurt anyone. It is when the use of alcohol is abused and/or done irresponsibly (such as driving under the influence) that it becomes "unhealthy". Actually, frequent yet moderate consumption of alcohol is said to decrease the risk of heart attacks and increases the level of "good" cholesterol. As far as smoking goes, I don't believe there are ANY benefits whatsoever associated with smoking. Another point: A person can drink moderately and it doesn't affect any of the people who just happen to be in the same room with him/her. The same cannot be said for smoking. |

Smoking a cigarette and dealing with second hand smoke is far more less harmful than a drunk driver coming at you. Personally, I don't hang around places where people smoke.....and I am not against anyone with the habit either. It is a matter of choice. I do not oppose people drinking....just don't drive if your are drinking. There is a personal responsibility to all of it. |

drinking and driving is one thing and drinking is another. drinking and driving is everyones buisness. wheather or not you smoke or drink is nobodies buisness. i someone wants to drink or smoke themselves to death its their buisness. No one needs to tell someone what to do with their body |

Second hand smoke is really no worse for you than th air in some of the cities in this countryand it seems like them people in these places are the ones complaining. Smoking isnt something that you can just quit i have all of the willpower in the world and i have only been smoking for 3 years and i cant quit. Do I wish I had never started? Yes |

I think that drinking is worse. What is more dangerous than someone with a snoot full amd driving a car? My husband and I were very nearly killed by someone who had already killed 2 other people by driving drunk and he was still allowed to be driving on the streets ! Someone asked why alcohol was not monitored like cigarettes are. I think it is because the ones who make the laws enjoy their 3 martini business lunches and are not about to make a law restricting them from something THEY enjoy! I do not smoke , but I will take my chances with a smoker any day rather than to meet someone on the road who is bombed out of their skull on alcohol! |

If both alcohol and tobacco are used in moderation by a person, tobacco would be the worst of the two. Tobacco has long term effects on the body, some of which are not reversible. Alcohol, when used wisely and in moderation, does effect the body, but most all effects are reversible. There are even studies that show alcohol to be beneficial to one's health. Once again, moderation is the key. I have used both alcohol and tobacco. I learned long ago that a person can put down either with no problem if they have the will to do so. That will has to come from deep within thoug. |

alcohol by virtue of the fact that it is a mind-altering drug. A person using tobacco can operate relatively normally. A person under the influence of alcohol becomes severely impaired. Some great social problems can be attributed to alcohol abuse-- domestic abuse, violence, automobile fatalities. The worse you can say about tobacco use is that it's unhealthy and makes the air slightly less breathable for other people. In general, people addicted to tobacco lead relatively long, normal, productive lives while alcoholism is a devastating disease. By far, alcohol is a worse drug. |

Well nobody beats thier kids and wife when they smoke too many ciggarettes, cigarettes have never been the subject matter of family counseling. Health wise Ill bet that pure tobacco is not nearly as harmful as the kind thats sold by big corporations that include various chemicals such as ammonia to make them more addictive. Both are bad and its very hypocritical for the government to leave both legal and not legalize Marijuana. A drug is a drug...........Andy |

Personally, I think drinking is WAY worse. When someone drinks and drinks to become drunk they become stupid!!!!! They also become a diffrent person. Tobacco doesn't do that. It hurts the body and the brain. It also is highly more advertised against than alchol. Every know and then you'll see a "don't drink and drive" commercial. But not as much as the "no smoking" commercials. |

Actually, there has been car accidents because someone was trying to light their ciggarette and wasn't paying attention, or because their ashes fly and set their car on fire and they are paying attention to that... Tobacco can kill the one who smokes, and those who breathe in the smoke (as I'm sure you know). Alcohol, if used in moderation, can actually be healthy, where as tobbacco never is. However, I consider them equally bad. |

Yes, cigarettes can cause accidents by being a distraction. But you can say the same thing about many, many things-- changing the radio, talking to a friend, eating, using cell phones, putting on makeup, etc. What distinguishes alcohol as a particular danger is that the consumption of it inevitably impairs your ability to drive and your judgement, so that you are more likely to drive even though you are dangerously impaired. Furthermore, since it is such a commonly used drug it is one of the most common causes of traffic fatalities. Can't say the same thing about cigarettes. |

good point, i know personally that both have their bad regions. Smoking to the individual, and drinking to the whole, as was said. It is fairly balanced where i am, but there are different target mediums and means to get both messages to the right people. the shock ad thing is the most common. good post |
