Children Living In Prison? -BreathingBody

Children need their mothers, isn't that right? I was listening to the radio this morning and I heard this. A mayor (I forgot where) wants to build a place IN the womens part of the prison where the children can live so they could be able to see their mothers everyday. Keep in mind these are prisoners who've been convicted of murder all the way to petty crimes. For one I don't think that is a safe environment for children to be living in especially being exposed to all that kind of prison life. What do you think about it? Would you agree to this? -BB

Date: 1/28/2003 6:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 60018    I completly disagree! It may be good for them to see their mothers but those women aren't responsible enough to be mothers! UG!

Date: 1/28/2003 7:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 1334    I have not decided yet if I am for or against this, but I have seen Tv Shows such as mugshots and others on court tv showing this in states that already do it. The mothers and children are not housed with the other inmates they are in a seperate part of the prison the rooms are set up as studio apartments, and the children only stay until a certain age. I am not sure if that is 1 or 5, the mothers also take parenting classes while the children are there with them so when the parent gets out they have a bond with the child and the parent will have the skills needed to take care of the child. ...
Date: 1/28/2003 8:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 54968    That's kind of sad. Just because their mother made a mistake, they have to spend their life in prison, too? How sad..
Date: 1/28/2003 8:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 55499    well actually it isn't all that new in Canada. Because in Joliete in Québec Canada there is a prison that does have a program made for mothers who have children.
Date: 1/28/2003 10:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    i don't think murders should be kept with petty crime people after that....if it's a temporary situation(they were arrested for a petty crime and are only serving a few weeks to a few months)... maybe.. but if they have done something to such a degree to be put in jail.. they would have thier children taken away by the state
Date: 1/28/2003 10:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    also think... they take children away from parents if they deem them unfit to raise the child or they feel the child could be in danger.. remember a few months(maybe a year or so now) they took away a child from his parents because he was a tad over weight(what i think was wrong of them to do so but social services did) do you think it's right that some mothers lose thier children yet mothers in prison keep thiers?
