She stood upright, looking down the ramp and back. Grey hair windblown, hands under her chin, Fingers fanned across her face. Distraught at her confusion, maddened by her mind, Unsure where to go. When I asked if she was alright, the tears began to pour. I’ve gone for walks all my life, been this way before. But today I just can’t find my way back home. The airconditioning feels so good, she said as she sat in my car. She knew her address, a few blocks away, I said it wasn’t far. I let her out, watched her into her house, And I wondered who would help her tomorrow. That it didn’t happen that way is my personal shame and society’s sorrow. I just drove by, watched in my mirror As she spun like a leaf in the wind. I had no time to be kind, no time to be her friend. Nothing on my schedule was that important, Nothing etched in stone. Yet I pulled onto the freeway, left her lost and alone. And my heart was crushed by the soulless thing I’d done. Chosing between god and time, God help me time has won.
