(12/31/02 - Middletown, Delaware) — Philadelphia has the Mummers, but only Middletown, Delaware, can lay claim to the Hummers parade.
While the Mummers wear fancy feather costumes and are known for their graceful strut, the Hummers include men with beer bellies in bikinis on roller skates.
The Hummers parade began as a spoof about 30 years ago with a band of buddies wearing Christmas ornaments on their heads, marching to a sick friend's house.
Grand Marshall-for-life Jack Schreppler says it is still a come-as-you-are event.
