(12/31/02 - KEY WEST, Fla.) — Sometimes the big one gets away _ but rarely after it's been stuffed and mounted.
Harvey Johnson is searching for the 12-foot hammerhead shark that for years had lured patrons to his restaurant, Captain Runaground Harvey's. The big fish was pried off the top of a station wagon outside the restaurant Dec. 22 or 23.
The 150-pound shark was spotted soon after the theft, heading up the Keys on a flatbed truck, police spokesman Steve Torrence said.
Torrence said Friday that police had spoken with a potential suspect but hadn't tracked down the hammerhead. "They're still looking for it up and down the Keys everywhere," he said.
The shark has appeared on postcards and in movies including Wesley Snipes' 1994 film "Drop Zone." Another shark memento is a scar below Johnson's left knee; the hammerhead bit Johnson after he caught it in 1988.
The restaurant is offering a reward _ with no questions asked _ for the safe return of the shark.
The amount of the reward "depends on what condition it is in," Johnson said. "Since it bit me, it has a lot more sentimental value."
