My mom was telling me how ungreatful I was because I was comlaining about not having any friends(besides USM) and she told me a story about when she was in about the 6th grade.

My mom was very VERY poor when she was young because my grandpa (God rest his soul) was a drunk and my Granny raised 6 kids by herself. My mom her sister and her four brothers. My grandpa would beat my granny and never gave them anything but hell. My granny couldn't work because she had to raise the six kids so she was always the first in the free cheese line at the grocery store and they were on food stamps and all that good stuff. My granny has always got by the best she could with the kids. Everything they got came from a yard sale...but they were happy to get it. They had to live off bean cakes and ketchup and crackers...but they were happy to have it. My mom never had any friends. Maybe one or two. My granny bought her some high heels one time from a yard sale. My mom said this excited her because she rarely, if ever, got anything at all. She was so anxcious to wear her new high heels to school and show them off to eveyone that she couldn't hardly sleep that night.

The next moring my mom woke up without putting up a fight. She slipped on her best dress, which was next to rags, and slipped on her new high heels! She fixed her hair the best she knew how and spritzed some perfume across her neck that she only wore on special occasions and off to school she went.

When she got to school, she found that what she was most proud of she was being made fun of for. She didn't know why. In her eyes the high heels were just like brand new ones.

When she was doing a work sheet she said the led in her pencil broke so she had to go sharpen it. She walked up there and walked back to her seat. The teacher started laughing and told her that means she liked clicking her heels so good that she needed to get up and walk around the class room and back and forth again. My mom just stared at her teary eyed like she didn't think the teacher was serious until she saw the teacher motion with her hands to rise and come forth. My mom walked back and forth about five times. She said that the teacher and students all were making fun of her while she proudly walked back and forth in her new shoes....She told me she'd never forget it for as long as she lived.

How it changed my life:

Made me realize how easy I got it goin' for me.

It's good you have someone to remind you of all that you have and what you have (thankfully) missed out on. Have a great New Year noticing all the good in your life!

Date: 1/2/2003 5:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    awwwwww this is very sad what they did to your mother hun, I think that teacher was very cruel and I considered her worse than the kids for making fun as she should have known better, my mother tells me similar stories to this because of them being so poor in the depression years, and yes, it made me realize how lucky I was in my growing up years, and I look at my kids and tell them how much luckier we all were compared to their grandmothers early years.....good post hun...hugs Grammy

Date: 1/3/2003 8:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 39887    My mother passed away in 1996 and it seems like yesterday. There is nothing in the world that can fill that void, believe me!! Love her and tell her you do everyday, it might be the last thing she hears from you and that would be a good thing to hear.
Date: 1/3/2003 8:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 39887    That teacher still exists in schools today but thank goodness its few of them. I've had my fights with teachers over my children, some have to be reminded that they are not GOD!!!!
