I've heard it both ways so I'm not sure. It was true about the family being murdered there and possibly about the haunting but like Katsho said, it was probably exaggerated.  |

It was a hoax. Ronald DeFoe Jr. really did kill his parents and brothers and sisters in 1974, but George and Kathy Lutz basically lied about what they claimed happened to them. They have admitted it was a hoax. Various people who have lived there since have all denied witnessing any paranormal activity. Mr. Lutz (among other people) claimed that the land was once used as an Indian burial ground of sorts, but there is no record of that being true whatsoever.  |

Don't feel bad. I'm obsessed with stuff like that and I belived it to be true for about 20 years. It's just been recently that I found out different through tons of research. |

It was a hoax, the guy couldnt afford the house, and the lawyer for the former resident was looking for any way to get his client off murder charges, so they cooked up this fake ghost story and everybody bought it. At least thats the word around the campfire......Andy  |

Yeah, Andy is pretty much right. I also used to think highly of Ed and Lorianne warren until I found out about the hoax. They claim to have witnessed paranormal activity in the house. Since it was a hoax, I'm drawn to believe that they lied for publicity. |

this is so weird that you posted this now, because I am just sitting here reading different web sites about it and some say it's a hoax but others say it's true, so I'm really not sure. I think it was probably true, but exagerated more and more as the story grew.  |

I have read a lot of mixed opinions on this. Some say it is true and others say it was a money making scam. But the fact is, there is a family that has been living there quite happily for many years now. they have had no disturbances at all... so I really dont know what to think.  |

it is a true story.. the movie was based on the book.. the book is more true to the real life then the movie.. the movie sort of glorifies.. it all... it also depends on if you believe in all that stuff  |

The original house was torn down some time ago, but there was another house built on that property. The Amityville residents resent the book and movie, they believe it brought negative and unwanted attention to their quiet, safe cummunity, the locals will deny any such thing happening there. But people still visit the existing property and it annoys the current owners. As much as I would like to believe in it, I have to maintain a certain level of skeptisim . Besides there are too many real ones to worry about one hoax. The real ghost stories never get movies made about them, yet they are the most intresting...........Andy |

If you type in "amityville" in the search stories box at the bottom left of the usm screen..a bunch of stories and info on Amityville horror will pop up..It's been asked about time and time again..I've always been facinated by the mystery..Just knowing that the murders were an actual occurence is good enough for me..I'd be mighty suprised if there wasn't any sort of super natural activity after that..the amityville site gives me the chills.  |
