Why animals cannot think?...Stargazer.

Why Animals Cannot Think. Why is there a cognitive gulf between other animals and humans? Current fashion favours our greater understanding of Theory of Mind as an answer, and Language is another obvious candidate. But I think that analysis of the evolution of means-end cognitive mechanisms suggests that there may be a further significant difference: where animals will only perform those means which they (or their ancestors) have previously used as a route to some end, humans can employ observation to learn that some novel means is a route to a desired end. In short, human can learn from observation, where animals can learn only from first-hand experience. This obviouslly would not apply to dolphins , who have their own sofisticated form of language. Stargazer.

Date: 12/20/2002 5:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 18527    what of the bird who built a tool to retrieve food? no prior experience, no examples, she simply observed the problem and formed and enacted a solution
Date: 12/20/2002 5:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 14780    Interesting info here..thanks for sharing.
Date: 12/20/2002 5:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 22852    Hey what is up with all the big words and on a friday night no less..LOL My dog is very smart and he does think, he even cons us. When he wants to be loved on he will lift his leg and "limp" as if he is hurt and look up at me with his puppy eyes and I say Oh you are so full of it and he will run in circles around the house. Then one night I was sitting on the couch ready to eat a roast beef sandwich and the dog acts like he has to go out so I open the kitchen door and then go to the porch door and the dog waits until the first door is almost closed then slips back into the house and jumps onto the couch to eat my sandwich and here I come running through the house screaming "don't you touch my sandwich" and just as I get into the living room he drops the sandwich, well needless to say I gave it to him after all I didn't want his doggy germs..LOL
Date: 12/20/2002 5:05:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19342    The goal with animals here ,is to obtain food as a result , clearly not a sign of intelligence , but of pure survival instinct.
Date: 12/20/2002 5:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 47699    Even a mouse can learn how to get through a maze through trial and error. There are a lot of animals who are smarter than some humans. My labrador retriever figured out how to open the door by himself. Nobody taught him how to do that.
Date: 12/20/2002 5:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19342    Storm , lol.
I dont doubt , that your dog loves you , and im sure he , recognize his owner , but its a far cry from actuall intelligence , i think.
Thanks for the reply!

Date: 12/20/2002 5:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 47699    I just remembered how I've seen chimps put sticks down termite holes to retrieve them. That's a primitive form of using tools but they figured it out. It would take a smart monkey to figure out how to make his own, little fishing pole.
Date: 12/20/2002 5:10:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19342    Kethria...ive heard about that...but i believe it was a monkey , you are refering to.
Aside from the fact the monkeys are primates , closelly related to humans , i really dont have an answer to that!

Date: 12/20/2002 5:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19342    Wildbob...food as a reward will do it 99% of the time.
Even i respond to that!
lol.

Date: 12/20/2002 5:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19342    Hi , there frankenstain...yeah , i know , i think thats what Kethria was refering to , i remember that too.
Like i said , it must be the close relation to human genome.

Date: 12/20/2002 5:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 18527    no it was a crow... http://www.news-journalonline.com/2002/Aug/9/NOTE3.htm
Date: 12/20/2002 5:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 18527    animals can and do think and communicate amongst themselves. they are not as intelligent as humans but to say that they cannot think is a grave error.
Date: 12/20/2002 5:22:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19342    Kethria!!!
I am at a loss for words , unheard of , if you knew me!
You have certainlly "stumped the host" here!
Ill have to get back to you on that!
But as far as i can tell , you are absolutly right!
Good Call!

Lol.

Date: 12/20/2002 9:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 54084    I think my horse is smarter than most people I know. LOL!! She amazes me everyday, and not all of it is for a food reward. Silents Star
Date: 12/21/2002 12:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 53052    animals can think!!! they can remember... they know right from wrong...my cat thinks before she jumps all the time..
Date: 12/21/2002 1:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 26452    I compleatly disagree with that, I was raised around many animans my entire life, and so has my mother, I am no expert, but animans are very intellegent...and dogd dont just "recognize their owner" they know who they love, and animals do love. I'd argue with this more, but Im very tired, I'll check back tomorrow..
