I posted something on this earlier today, but I didn't know some of the facts you posted. Thanks for warning all of us. This is so disgusting, I could freakin' puke. Not only are black widows dangerous, but brown recluses are taboo to play around with, too. Can't they find other means to ward of insects? With the technology we have, we ought to be able to figure something out... |

Spiders, insects and bugs, are my thing, by my tag, you probably figured that out. The reason why Black Widow Spiders are in grapes, is to ward off insects. This is legal, just check the grapes. Here is how to identify a black Widow, A black widow is a spider that is solid in the same color(usually black, but they are also Red, Brown, Blue, Green, Purple.) They have a marking underneath the adomen(sp), it is ussually red, but the marking can be Blue, Yellow, Orange or white color. The marking underneath is ussually an hourglass shape, it can also be two seperate triangles, with corners pointed toward each other, or an "X" shape.

The vemon from a Black Widow is the most poisonous in North America. More poisonous that your snakes. The most poisonous snake in NA is the Parrie Rattlesnake(I think that is what it is called), this spider venom, by drop is 15 times as strong. A good thing is that this spider does not inject nearly as much venom as your snakes, and many other spiders. Not enough to kill you in many cases. There are some cases where people have actaully died from these bites(deaths were not really from the bite itself, but the venom ussually will make a medical condition worse that what it would be(that is what most people died from these bites actaully die from when they are biten). Anyone under 12 is at risk, as well as anyone over 50. Anyone who has a medical condition, like Astma, Low Blood Presure, Diabetic, are also at risk to die from this spider. |

Hmm I got a totally different meaning from the article then I guess everyone else did. I didn't see anywhere that it said that they used black widows to ward off other insects, but that other natural predators, harmless ones, not black widows were being used in the fields along with less pesticides which may have been why the black widows were in the crates because they weren't killed off by the pesticides. "Grapes exported from the United States may harbor pests of concern elsewhere, but they rarely require treatment, although this situation can change rapidly. Black widow spiders are occasional hitchhikers within grape clusters or within grape boxes; SO2 fumigation, alone or combined with carbon dioxide, has been used successfully to kill the spiders before export." "Grapes imported into the United States from other parts of the world are routinely fumigated with methyl bromide, following treatment schedules issued by the USDA APHIS, to prevent the entry of insect pests." |

Cheaper than pesticides? Guess they will do anything to make a profit. I can just hear them now, "I don't care about the consumers health and safety, I need that extra 5 dollars!" |

How do I teach a black widow to lay down and roll over so I can identify her. What really is scary is the fact hat these spiders are not hynotized to stay on the grapes. Anything you reach for in the store could be a new destination for these spiders. It may be cheaper to them but a hospital stay or a funeral would not be cheaper for me!! By the way, I hate all insects!!! |

I'm sorry but I don't want to get close enough to see anything on its body. I am terrified of spiders. I hope I never get bit, I'll have a heart attack and die!! |
