(12/18/02 - Royal Oak, Michigan) — It's the attack of the guinea pigs. City officials in a Detroit suburb ordered a wrecking crew, after hundreds of guinea pigs had taken over a man's home. Monday, a demolition team leveled the house in Royal Oak.

City building department spokesman Robert Hudson says the owner had allowed more than 440 guinea pigs to run free in the house. Hudson says the animals did so much damage, the home couldn't be saved.

According to Hudson, the smell of guinea pig pee was so strong, firefighters had to wear air tanks and hazmat gear.

The man is now reported to be in a nursing home. And almost all the animals were placed with pet stores or the local humane society.
