I think that interesting. More people die from alcohol related instances than being high on marajuana. I feel that if the more dangerous of the 2 is legal then they should both be legal. IMHO! |

NO! Okay, they preach to kids NOT to smoke pot and now they are gonna legalize it?? This is a death trap waiting to happen. Lets see the numbers soar of the people who will be killed by people smoking pot and driving in the years after this is passed. Whoever proposed this idea, needs to wake up and needs a good slap in the face! This is such a horrible bill. . *Belle* |

Actually Spyke that isnt totally accurate since there are no tests so far that can prove that someone is driving under the influence of marijuana..so really..the statistics arent accurate.. |

I agree Belle..I think it will be interesting to see how the statistics change for the worse..Here I am telling my kids to stay away from pot and telling them the dangers to it..and then some bill may be passed legallizing it, therefore tellling my kids that all these years I have been lying to them, and since it is legal it must be ok..ugh!! |

Lady Luck is right, A cop is not stupid and if they think that you are under the influence of any kind of substance you get the standard sobriety test. If you fail the sobriety test and they give you a breathalizer and you pass it. That doesn't mean that you get off. Instead of DWI you get DWAI which is what is given to people that have accidents or are stopped because they took a medication or something impaired their ability. Most first offense DWI charges are dropped to DWAI. They may not be able to say with 100% certainty that you are high, or strung out on coke, but they KNOW you are under the influence of something and can charge you with such.. |

Many people smoke. Many people drink. They are both legal. Not everyone does this, they are free to make their own choice. The same is true of smoking Marijuana. People who smoke Marijuana are far less likely to drive, they mostly just lie back and watch tv, or something similar. There is very little impulse to get up and move about, or do anything active at all. There are tests that can be done to locate any Marijuana in the system of a person, the same as any chemical substance. |

Tandris, SOME people may be like that, but not everyone. My father smokes pot and he usually just lays around the house but he can become abusive when he's doing it. I had a cousin die from driving and smoking pot, luckily, he didn't kill anyone else while doing it. Everyone will have a different reaction. Some better than others. |

For some time I have been convinced that pot should be legalized. It could then be taxed and regulated. I do not advocate taking drugs. The money that is currently used for the prevention of pot could be used instead to deal with the problems and victims of drugs. Tax revenue generated from another sin tax could help offset other taxes.. |

Tandris, they can test you for a drug but they cannot say whether you are infact at that time under the influence of the drug. Mj tests positive in the urine for up to 30 days. I can take a test tomorrow and fail it for a joint I smoked 2 weeks ago. The hard core drugs stay in the system for up to the 3 days. So I can snort some coke today and two days from now test postive for it but no longer be under its effects. There is no effective method to test what the person is directly under the influence of at the time. They can speculate about what it is but they can't say 100%. Alcohol, yes because of it's breakdown pattern in your bloodstream, but as far as the others, they can't tell. |

OH MY CALL THE NATIONAL GUARD YOUR AUNT CLEANS THE WHOLE HOUSE WHEN SHE'S HIGH!!!! HOW TERRIBLE BAN IT BAN IT! You talk about the people being killed in driving accidents and such, First off it was found that only 3% of all teens had smoked pot within the last month and as teens are usually the most destructive drivers and the ones to drive under the influence of alcohol you can eliminate a LARGE portion of accidents. You talk about the people being killed by someone driving under the influence of pot, What about all the millions of Americans killed by cigerettes?Isnt it worse that there's a product already legal that leads to substantially more deaths? People smoke cigarettes under there own will ,The same should go for Marijuana If you let alcohol and cigarettes be legalized why not Marijuana??One Argument usaully use to thwart the hope of legalizing Marijuana is that it could bring new youths to try it and then since Marijuana is a gateway drug We will have nation of junkies. This argument is no more as good as th first one Because acohol is out there and not everyone Drink Giving us an example of a potentially dangerous Item that is controlled. |

Rowley YEP that is right MY AUNT SMOKES..the woman is also 43 years old has had two hip surgeries and has spinal arthris in her lower back. Her second hip replacement caused major nerve damage to the point that she is on anti flammatory medication and methadone for the pain. She takes 3 methadone a day, with the last one wearing off at about 2am. She refuses to resort to getting up in the middle of the night to take another methadone, self increasing her dosage and distrupting her sleep for several hours until the pill kicks in, when she can smoke a joint, clean her house and fall sound asleep with no pain through the night without getting herself hooked on painkillers that she needs to walk, sit or lie down for any extended period of time. I dunno about anyone else but I think I would much rather smoke a joint every night than pop a bunch of pills that are the equivelant of herion and at the rate that methedone is sold on the street would probably in reality be a LOT cheaper to do these days. But hey that is just me.....LOL |

Ok, I'll give you that, it does affect people in different ways, I'm just going on the experiences I've had with myself and every other person I know who's done it. If you've had other experiences with it (ie people going hyper) then fair enough, good point. As for the testing, it is possible to be done, because as Azairyia said, you can be booked for suspicion, and then if the drug is present it can be upped to the full under the influence charge. |

Social slacker, There is an obvious difference in Marijuana and Ecstacy(And more of the Extreme drugs).Ecstacy KILLS people. I mean that leads to another argument For Marijuana, It will Be a deterrent from rave drugs. People know Ecstasy is dangerous, And If they could smoke Marijuana legally I think they would chose Marijuana over it. |

Tandris but the only thing that they can test for is the concentration of the drug. Now they know that it takes 3 days to disipate from the system if it something like heroin or cocaine. But Marijuana is 30 days. Now I would suspect that if you smoke a joint a day that your level of THC that will be found in your body is bound to be at a level point, because doing it once a day you are never allowing your body the time to filter it out. In other words I could smoke a joint at 3pm and at 7pm be pulled over, given a blood test and found to have a count of 1.0 for THC in my body. THAT 1.0 could be normal for me if I am a daily or habitual smoker. 4 hours ago when I initially got high my level could have been only 1.5 while I was under the influence of it. So if you are following along with me, they have to develop some kind of test that is going to have to be done from long term study including people from all walks of life from the occassional to heavy smoker. Other than that they can't set proper blood levels that would consider a person to be under the influence. I can spot someone that is high 20 feet away and cops usually can too. For the time being making it legal they would have to carry on as usual . If they suspect they will give you the standard sobriety test you know stand with your feet together head back, touch your fingertip to your nose....etc. If you fail that and they give you a breathalizer and you don't blow for alcohol they know that you under the influence of "something" and will charge you with DWAI, which is a lesser charge than DWI. What I do find sickening is those people that say they drive better when they are high. It effects your motor skills and in most people slows them down, so if someone's kid runs out in front of you, no matter how well you think you can drive, your reaction time getting your foot to the brake is not going to be equal to the reaction time you would have if you were not high. My husband's Uncle is Captain in our local police department, he will tell you there are two things that stick out like a sore thumb to them and tells them that a person is either drunk or high driving their car. They are driving FAR below the speed limit, and generally driving through the city where there are street lights, they tend to forget to turn on their headlights....LOL |
