A dog pees on a tree to mark his territory, to make sure no other dog will come near it. Humans make fences, and mark it with signs of existence to mark their territory. The family sets out boundaries not only in the small piece of land but inside the home, like wolfs in a pack. Humans have not lost their animal impulses to be territorial, but it is harder to be territorial. Humans also keep personal space. As a species we are like animals in the way that we are still tribal, have family orders or places, and the need for personal space, but we cannot use the same tact as we once did.

Over time have humans only become more skillful and cunning in the ways of their territory. People once used to chase others out of their hunting grounds by using force. Today people remove unwanted assailants by using overt measure such as calling the police or setting off their alarms. It is looked down upon socially if people try to hunt down the person and take care of it themselves, as they would have in the past. People mark the territory by using fences, and alarms to watch those fences. People no longer need a person to stand watch for invaders; they have video surveillance equipment. This may seem to make it easier, but it takes it away from the person and puts the security of their home in stranger’s hands. Desmond Morris wrote, “The tribal territory is the home base surrounded by the extending hunting grounds.” More and more people no longer hunt for their food. They no longer need hunting grounds. The hunting grounds turn into the place where they work. At work they cannot try to expel unwanted persons by force. They must put it in the hands of others to do so.

At home a person once struck down those whom tried to usurp the authority of the leader or elder. Today a mother cannot repeatedly strike down her child; outsiders come into the home and protect the child. The home itself has changed from what it once was. The home allows more access and changes how the family sleeps. The parent’s bedroom no longer is the hardest to get to or the most hidden away it is often the one that is more open and out to the public. It is more open because people want to have a view or keep their children at ease. Some family homes are small and can be accessed from multiple entries. There are more windows and less space. The mother and father choose more to live downstairs and have their children upstairs. It has also become more ecological to build a string of house together that are all the same rather then to contract the build or different homes. People no longer build at the sight, they now can have prefabricated home brought to them. The urge to have a different home still shows up, when they paint the rooms different colors. They also decide to lay down different floors. Those are some ways families still are regressed.

People like personal space. It is a hard thing to come by because when taking a bus, train, or airplane a person looses their personal space. A person can and often does become offensive of their personal space but not like in the past. A person may have taken action when another bumped them. Today it is generally accepted that they may not take physical force on another or mental force. People still try to have space by setting a bag or belonging next to them, but will move it when asked. People will not take force unless others push them to it, such as a person who persistently elbows you. Personal space is hard to find because a person may not have the room, because of their location or whom they are with. People sometimes like to become needy of another and follow them at a party. The person who is being followed may try to escape them to find some personal space but will not because they are followed. The lack of personal space seem to be more common because a person must except that more and more people are now present then what once was.

People are still tribal in the sense that they mark out their territory and that they have social orders, but they are also not as liberal. People no longer fight and then ask questions. They allow people more freedom in their homes, and property because of how the society works today. People no longer fights over their personal space s they did. They accept that they may not be able to have as much space as they would like, but there is still a line on how much a person wants to have. Families have become less individualized in the way that they like to have strong differences from the outside world. They choose to be more social and that makes them less different. People may still have some family traditions but not like they once had. There are still orders in the family but no major steps can be taken, like beating a child. People have evolved, but they are still territorial in many ways, like the dog peeing on the tree.
