My mom thinks im lactose intolerarnt (sp?) Ever since i was a baby, they thought that might be it..My stomach hurts when i drink milk...

It started when i was young..i would cry..I feel its like an on and off thing...I remeber my stomach hurting again when i drank milk when i was around the age of 13 or so..It seems to last a year or so then i can drink milk again and it dont bother me, now im 18 and its even worse now when I drink milk..

I try to get the special kind of milk, symptoms are not so bad, but it still hurts my stomach..any suggestions? Maybe im not lactose..Its strange how it seems to be an "on and off" thing...what do you guys think??

Date: 11/25/2002 6:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 25390    Lactaid!! The pill, NOT the drink. BLECH!!!! Seriously though, take a pill before you have any dairy, and it will help a LOT. I don't drink milk without it!
Date: 11/25/2002 6:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 58022    Oh I know what you go through. I LOVE milk-it's my fav drink. I'd rather have it any day over a soft drink. I started going where I'd have 5 giant-sized Taco Bell cups of milk a day. About 7 months ago my stomach would just hurt so bad. I;d never felt any kind of pain in my stomach like this before (I was 13 then, 14 now). I had no idea it was because of the milk and went on drinking. I went the doctor a couple of times, they thought I had too much acid on my stomach or something like that. My mom researched on the net and read that teenagers can develope a lactose intolerant. We read more about it and diagnosed what I had as that. I haven't had to quit drinking milk-I just limit my daily intake to about 2-3 glasses a day now. I don't know what I'd do if I had to start drinking that nasty lactose-free milk.
Date: 11/25/2002 7:06:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    try not drinking it on an empty stomach! that is a huge key factor of it... milk is really hard to digest... and my friend has an intersting theroy on milk*L* how he looks at it is that milk is meant to make a small cow become a big cow fairly quickly same with breast milk and a baby it helps the child grow real quick... personally i can't drink the stuff but it doesn't bother me any... i just take a 1 a day multi vitamin(and i suggest everyone to take one they are great!)
Date: 11/25/2002 8:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 26452    I have the same problem, but lucky for me, I don't like milk lol. Have you tried just drinking Soy Milk? That doesn't taste too bad
Date: 11/25/2002 8:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 1334    as a baby I had to have lactofree formula, and as a toddler I had to drink Goats milk (the thought makes me ill )but as a teen I loved milk went through a gallon every 2 days, but in the last 2 years I have gone back to getting ill when I drink milk. I try to stay away from it when I can. When I do have milk I have 2% instead of whole. ...
