Katie knelt down on the floor, buried her face in her hands, and released a torrent of tears. Stanleigh, worried that he'd done something cruel, stood up and bent down beside her. His warm hand rested upon her knee as he waited for her crying to subside. He leaned close to her and whispered, "Shhh...don't cry. I'm sorry if I made you cry...please don't."
Katie shook her head. "It's not you," she moaned.
Stanleigh frowned. "Who else could it be? I'm the one who was cruel to you," he admitted.
"It's James," she choked out.
He let out a small laugh. "I thought you loved him."
"I'm falling out of love with him," she admitted.
Stanleigh lifted one eyebrow. Katie, still sobbing, leaned against him. One of his slender arms found it's way around her, drawing her close against his warmth. She rested her face against the crook of his neck. His chin rested upon her hair as he kept his eyes squeezed shut. Katie could feel the rapid heart-beat of the young man.
"Don't cry anymore, Katie. Tell me what's with him," he pleaded, hungry for hate-filled talk aimed against James. He was sick of everyone gloating about the horrible young man. Now it was time to hear someone say something negative against him.
When Katie gained control of herself, she tilted her head back to gaze at Stanleigh's eyes. They were filled with sympathy, unlike James's. Often, her boyfriend's eyes looked mean, dangerous, and hateful. Maybe because he spent a great majority of his time talking cruel about Stanleigh.
"Tell me what happened at the party," Stanleigh urged.
Katie took a deep breath and told him all of it: the drunkeness, James passing out on a lounge chair, everything. He listened as quiet as a funeral until she'd finished. Then he expressed his anger. "He's dumber than he boasts!" Stanleigh snapped. "He claims to be this good, moral young man, yet he goes and gets drunk."
"Scott passed out in a bowl of ranch dip," Katie murmurered, her cheeks red with anger.
"That's disgusting!" Stanleigh exclaimed. "Don't any of them have pride?"
Katie frowned and shook her head. She felt ashamed to have gone to such a party. Tears were beginning to spill out of her eyes again. Stanleigh pulled her against him again, whispering soothing words to her. Strangley, he comforted her better than James ever did when she was sad. Sitting in Stanleigh's room with him, she realized how much she was growing to like the handsome artist.
When Katie finished crying, she sat up straight and gazed deeply into Stanleigh's buttery-toffee brown eyes. Unconsciously, they began leaning close to each other. So close their noses were nearly touching. If they moved any closer, their lips would meet. Katie had thought about kissing Stanleigh's beautiful, sexy lips. She wanted to be with him rather than James in the worst way.
Stanleigh and Katie's lips were nearly touching when the door burst open violently. Like hell's fallen angel, Bailey Kretsch loomed in the doorway, glaring down upon the two. From the sight of the intimidating man, Katie's heart began to pound.
