The Things A Person Knows
Fire to the touch will singe Burn, blister and peel A flame will ravage as well as heat We know, yet do not feel A blade will cut and tear the flesh Let drops of blood appear The blade is smooth as candy Yet we know we are to fear A blizzard makes the heart beat quick Mesmerized by dancing snows We may watch from inside walls Yet it’s power we all know A fall from sky will cause a rush Pounding, thrashing, through the head With laws of gravity well instilled Impact will render dead These are things, we need not feel Nor experience to know the pain These are things a person knows ‘Tis why we all refrain Then there is love, the myth, and legend The unicorn of teenage reveries Have you ever felt it’s warmth? Please delve into your memories No touch, no smell, no taste, no sight Just sudden inner glow You were the one, the day we met These things a person knows And so for you, I’d risk the pain I’d take it all from you To ease the burdens that mar the life Is all I wish to do I’d hold your hand, hug you near Stay with you all the night I’d chase all nightmares far away Absorb all that may fright Never shall I want another As what we have still grows It’s as sure as burning flame These things, a person a knows.
