(10/31/02 - Detroit) — A retiree has sent $100 to a Detroit school district -- as reimbursement for stealing candy 55 years ago.

The 1947 graduate of Detroit Southeastern High School admits raiding the school's pantry while doing chores in the lunch room a couple times a week.

A $100 bill was mailed with an anonymous letter. The note says the writer is a highly respected, retired professional who has been troubled by the theft for many years.

Detroit schools chief executive Kenneth Burnley plans to take the money to the school Friday. He says students should learn that it's never too late to right a wrong.
