Cruising down the road in my 67 mustang fastback all decked out and ready to party. Seventeen years old, a senior in high school, accepted to my first choice college. My girl friend got accepted to the same college and we would be leaving this small town behind in less than a year. I had a epiphany at that moment. I was at a special place in my life; everything was going great and I knew it.
I was listening to Spooky woman on the radio as I drove out the main street of town. I headed out cemetery road. The cemetery dated back to the 1800’s and originally was outside of town, but the town had grown up around the cemetery and now stretched a good ways past it.
This was the first year that the high school was going to have a formal Halloween party. I think the town counsel figured if the high school kids had an event to attend that they wouldn’t get into other types of trouble. The high school kids had embraced the idea of a masked ball. Tonight was the big night. I was wearing a white tux with tails and had a phantom of the opera mask to complete my look.
Just before I got to the cemetery I notice a girl in a formal dress hitch hiking. It must have been someone from my school but I didn’t recognize her. I pulled over to see if I could help.
“Can you give me a lift?” she asked as she got into my car. “It’s just down the road a little.” she said.
She climbed into the car then asked “Do you like how I look?”
She was stunning. Blond hair and an elegant evening dress, but she looked much older than a high school student. She looked like she was at least in her mid twenties.
I pulled out onto the road again and we hadn’t gone very far when she said. “You can stop here.”
“Here?” I asked, “Right by the cemetery”
I pulled over. She looked into my eyes and said “Don’t you want to kiss me goodnight?”
I was more than a little creeped out. I said that I already had a girlfriend.
“Don’t you want to share my cold embrace in my satin bed?” she said as she stared into my eyes. “We can be together forever”
She opened the door and got out. She was walking towards the gates of the cemetery; then she looked back at me and motioned for me to follow her.
Instead I drove away as fast as I could. I already had a girlfriend and mine was alive. I was at a special place in my life; everything was going great and I wasn’t going to do anything stupid to ruin it.
