Teen Jumps Out Of Window To Escape Robber -"the axeman"

A teenage girl jumped to safety Wednesday morning after an armed burglar inside her apartment demanded money just before 8 a.m. The 17-year-old jumped from a second floor bathroom window at her Evanston home and then ran to a neighbor's house to get help.

"I thought somebody was trying to sell me something and she was just screaming 'Come here. Come here and help me.' I bet she got pneumonia because she had nothing on but just a night shirt," said next door neighbor, 88-year-old Cassandra Reed.

You could get a sense of how frightening a situation it was by listening to the disturbing 911 call Reed made for her neighbor.

911 Dispatch: Hello, go ahead. Cassandra Reed: Please come over here to 1874 Fairfax.

911 Dispatch: What's the problem?

Cassandra Reed speaking to girl: Have you been shot, honey?

Injured Girl takes phone: A man came into my apartment while I was sleeping and he was trying to rob us, but there ain't nothing there. Cause he said, if we ain't got no money, he was going to shoot me in the head. He told me to stay in the bathroom and I opened up the window and jumped out.

Cassandra says the whole incident has her scared.

"It's the first time anything like this has happened, but if you had heard her holler it would have made you sick. She's just 17," Reed said.

Doctors at University Hospital said the girl has two broken ankles and probably needs surgery.

Police have found no sign of the burglar, who is described as an African American male, of medium height, build and complexion. The suspect was last seen wearing red shoes and a dark jacket.

First of all, what do you think about this, and second of all, what would you have done in the same situation???

Date: 10/31/2002 11:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 49025    I probably would have jumped as well. I would rather deal with two broken ankles instead of a gunshot to the head. I hope they catch the guy that broke in.
Date: 10/31/2002 12:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 48812    I woulda fought to the last breath. Fight or flee? I'd choose fight. Defending my home, my family......but that's just me, LOL.........if i could see that the gun was really loaded, if it was REALLY a gun, then maybe the circumstances woulda been different.....but if i could find no evidence that there was a weapon, and i had other family members or friend in the same house, then i'd fight and try to protect them.....hmm.........good question, tho........

Date: 10/31/2002 6:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 52490    I dont know, I'd probobaly have done the same but like Uber Soldat said, if my siblings or mother was in the house I might've had to fight but I admire the girl for her courage, I mean even though its only 2 stories I cant say that would be the #1 option for me.
