There is something they have to do to the original movie filmstrip in order to make it compatible for DVD and VHS-- Otherwise you have a black bar at the top and bottom of the screen. |

Meaning that the filmstrip is too wide for a tv screen, so they have to 'stretch' it up. Get it now? (My brother works at a vodeo store...LOL) |

In theatres, you see a big screen version. Once it's on video, they have to squeeze the life out of it to shrink it down to TV size. |

it means that it's brought to you in a 4x3 version instead of the "wide screen" 16x9(on average) |

they don't really "squeeze" the strip or else you would see very tall people and it would all look off.. they just trim the sides and might stretch it a tiny bit(not noticeable) have you ever watched a "wide screen" version of something and you see the black boxes on the top and bottom.. it's basically clipping the sides so they don't have to put those in(formatted to fit this screen) and they also drop the resolution of it to fit onto the tape becuase it can't hold the high resolution*L* what wonderful things my 10,000 film school education has given me*LOL* |

they also add frames because a theatre runs by film frames what is 24 frames a second but a television runs by 30 frames a second so that's another form of formatting |

It means that you get the pan and scan version of the film instead of the widescreen version. That really means you miss out on everything that was recorded. Rent a regular pan and scan version and a widescreen version and you'll see the difference! |

How about if we just say that it must be reduced in size to fit your TV screen , because it is too big? |

PS. Not quite on everything that was filmed by the director, but on his vision of what the scene was to look like. And you do miss out on some of the action. |

Reduced in size? If it doesn't say widescreen, than you probably are getting a pan and scan version of the tape. |
