Ya'll probably think that i'm stupid for asking this cuz everyone else probably knows this and not me..lol...

I notice on all the rented movies i watch, and at the beginning of the movie, it says something like this:

"This movie has been formatted to fit your television screen"

What the HECK do they mean by that??

Date: 9/28/2002 4:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 17014    There is something they have to do to the original movie filmstrip in order to make it compatible for DVD and VHS-- Otherwise you have a black bar at the top and bottom of the screen.
Date: 9/28/2002 4:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    LMAO to be brutally honest with you...it means this......the movie has been formatted to fit your television screen. LMAO No really I have no clue LMAO
Date: 9/28/2002 4:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 17014    *video...store
Date: 9/28/2002 4:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 17014    Meaning that the filmstrip is too wide for a tv screen, so they have to 'stretch' it up. Get it now? (My brother works at a vodeo store...LOL)
Date: 9/28/2002 4:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 61811    what kelsey said... or it could be too big for the screen also. jackie
Date: 9/28/2002 4:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 38278    In theatres, you see a big screen version. Once it's on video, they have to squeeze the life out of it to shrink it down to TV size.
Date: 9/28/2002 4:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    it means that it's brought to you in a 4x3 version instead of the "wide screen" 16x9(on average)
Date: 9/28/2002 4:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    they don't really "squeeze" the strip or else you would see very tall people and it would all look off.. they just trim the sides and might stretch it a tiny bit(not noticeable) have you ever watched a "wide screen" version of something and you see the black boxes on the top and bottom.. it's basically clipping the sides so they don't have to put those in(formatted to fit this screen) and they also drop the resolution of it to fit onto the tape becuase it can't hold the high resolution*L* what wonderful things my 10,000 film school education has given me*LOL*
Date: 9/28/2002 4:19:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19927    *smacks danny*
Date: 9/28/2002 4:20:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19927    thanks Kelsey! LOL
Date: 9/28/2002 4:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19927    oh ok thanks guys i get it now! LOL
Date: 9/28/2002 4:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    they also add frames because a theatre runs by film frames what is 24 frames a second but a television runs by 30 frames a second so that's another form of formatting
Date: 9/28/2002 4:30:00 PM  ( Admin-DNL )   don't smack me
Date: 9/28/2002 4:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 29112    it means its formatted to fit your television screen (just thought i would jump on the band wagon)
Date: 9/28/2002 6:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 5555    It means that you get the pan and scan version of the film instead of the widescreen version. That really means you miss out on everything that was recorded. Rent a regular pan and scan version and a widescreen version and you'll see the difference!
Date: 9/28/2002 6:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 48809    How about if we just say that it must be reduced in size to fit your TV screen , because it is too big?
Date: 9/28/2002 6:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 5555    PS. Not quite on everything that was filmed by the director, but on his vision of what the scene was to look like. And you do miss out on some of the action.
Date: 9/28/2002 6:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 5555    Reduced in size? If it doesn't say widescreen, than you probably are getting a pan and scan version of the tape.
Date: 9/28/2002 7:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 54878    i always thought it said, "Floormated"
Date: 9/28/2002 8:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 1799    what does it mean? it means that its a piece of crap compared to the theatre..thats all ya need to know, CC..lol
Date: 9/28/2002 8:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 19927    lmao!!
Date: 9/28/2002 9:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 53284    And here I thought it was formatted to fit my TV not yours....LOL ( I think that it is really the aspect ratio )
