Does This Bother You Like It Does Me? **Frankenstein

I can't count the number of times I've come to this site lately only to find posts where students are asking us to do their homework for them. I come here to read, write, relax and just unwind. I hated school work when I was in school so I sure don't want to do it in my spare time now that I've been out of school for over twenty years. It's always the same story. The posts pop up late at night and the claim is that they forgot all about an assignment and it's due tomorrow. I think it's getting really old and I'm surely not the only one who feels that way. What is the cause of it? Is it just plain laziness? I just came from a post where one of the people to reply said, "Get off of the internet and look in your book." That sounds like good advice to me. If you've ever written a post like that, please know that I'm not trying to hurt your feelings. I really have your best interests at heart. How are you ever going to learn anything if others are doing your homework for you? I naively helped someone a few days ago and they never even thanked me. I was the only one who helped them. That made me feel like my input wasn't appreciated. Then, I noticed that those sort of posts just keep coming. How do you honestly feel about it?

Date: 9/22/2002 9:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 52866    Yeah...I have my OWN homework to do! I finish my homework after a long day of school and cheerleading and baby-sitting and what-not and then to come on USM and see posts about homework help just bugs me lol. Kids should ask their parents...that's what I do...or phone their grandparents or aunts or uncles! Or friends!
Date: 9/22/2002 9:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 24003    I agree with you. Asking for help is one thing..asking for them to do it for you is another.
Date: 9/22/2002 9:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 45630    Well I'm studying to be a teacher and it is all good experience for me. I would love to be a tutor until then. But I see what you mean. Cmon guys remember that the point of assessment is to find out how good you are not how good your fellow usmer's are. The only time people should do this is if they are doing a survey.
Date: 9/22/2002 9:15:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Yeah, I don't mind helping anyone if I can but I don't want to do a whole assignment. There is often a list of questions posted and the author is asking for the answers to them.
Date: 9/22/2002 9:17:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    They should just remember that we can't be there to take their tests for them. Us doing their homework does them absolutely no favors in the long run.
Date: 9/22/2002 9:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 49498    The only time I asked for help was with an essay, where I had written it, and wanted to know what you guys thought. I see that as posting an essay, not asking anyone to do my homework...am I right on that?
Date: 9/22/2002 9:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 49498    but I know what your talking about..they have sites for homework help...this is not one of them...sorry kids. lol
Date: 9/22/2002 9:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 42519    Ive done this once or twice, but I posted the assignment 2 weeks before it was due, asking for suggestions on how I could go about the assignment. I appreciated the input, and now I am graduated, I dont mind helping those because others have helped me. Although I have never gotten much thanx for it either, I didn't expect my actions to change the world, or their GPA. Just a little help helped them out, and I do the same once in a while for others. It does get annoying and you will see this happening all year until summer comes around again... its just the way this all works.. Love ya tonz
Date: 9/22/2002 9:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 38119    I find those posts so annoying.I did my homework the old fashioned way. I did it myself. I didn't get on the internet and ask other people to do it for me.
Date: 9/22/2002 9:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 15033    Oh Greeeaaat! Does this mean you're not going to help me pass my Trigonometry test then?
Date: 9/22/2002 9:28:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    M.Man, there was nothing wrong with you asking for criticism and/or input on your essay. Buffy, there was nothing wrong with you asking for a general idea of what you might do your assignment on especially since you did it so far in advance and you planned on the doing the work yourself. I think you know that that's not what I was talking about, though. I'm sure that you've seen the other types of posts.
Date: 9/22/2002 9:29:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    LOL @ Thunderhead! (I will if you'll help me with my chemistry.)
Date: 9/22/2002 9:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 32193    ok well i DID make a post about someone EXPLAINING how to do a problem on my homework..only because the problems in the book that they explained were WAY different then the one i had to do then...and i DID thank the people who helped me...so i dunno..it depends...cuz they werent doing my homework for me..just explaining it in a different way...
Date: 9/22/2002 9:37:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Snow Princess, you weren't asking anyone to do your work for you. Once again, that's not what I meant. You did nothing wrong.
Date: 9/22/2002 9:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 53836    yep, I won't help them, nope...I didn't have the internet when i was in school and I did all my homework without help, and I doubt i would've come ask for help online anyhow...folks could be yanking a chan with wrong answers, LOL...there you go Frank, just give them misleading info, have fun, hehe...they need to get a grip and get on the ball...I think those posts should be deleted!~SpaceCase,
Date: 9/22/2002 9:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 56410    Doesn't bug me. Gives me something to do. I can show how smart I really am. Besides, I like helping others.
Date: 9/22/2002 9:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    That's funny, SC! 148 squared is Baltimore. The capitol of Delaware is magnesium. LOL!
Date: 9/22/2002 9:48:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Aeris, you may be helping them that night but you're doing them no favor when test time rolls around.
Date: 9/22/2002 9:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 56410    And the only time I posted anything school related, I was in M.Man's situation. I wanted input on an idead that I later made into a poem..
Date: 9/22/2002 9:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    I agree with you. If they are turning to the internet for homework help, why not go to one of the many websites made especially for that reason. There are bunches of them. I know for a fact because I do educational searches on the net all the time because I homeschool my son.
Date: 9/22/2002 9:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Like I said before, there's nothing at all wrong with that.
Date: 9/22/2002 9:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 42519    we know what your talkin about, but just so you see not all of us schoolies are like that! Be nice frank!! LOL.. J/K! Love ya tonz
Date: 9/22/2002 9:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 53836    LOL Frank, i think you got it hehehe~SC
Date: 9/22/2002 9:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 22433    I agree. I've been done and outta school for a year and a bit now. I don't want to come on here in my free time and do more homework for other people. Although if they wanna come on here and ask people to do their homework for them, all the power to them. They just gotta remember that those who did their homework for them aren't going to be of much help come test day.
Date: 9/22/2002 9:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Snookums, I just have to wonder whatever happened to sitting down with a book and doing it the old-fashioned way. When I was in school, the only computers were owned by the government and big industry. Something like what is sitting in front of me right now was so big, it took a whole room to house it. We were lucky just to have electric typewriters for typing class. I remember when pocket calculators first came on the market. I got one which was made by Texas Instruments and it was huge. It was about as thick as a videocassette. The math teacher told me that I couldn't use it. In school and at home, we had paper, pencils, pens, notebooks, text books and maybe typewriters. I guess I could have called someone on the phone and asked them to do my homework for me but that thought never even occured to me.
Date: 9/22/2002 10:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    Thats the way it was when I was in school too. Some of these educational websites are very helpful with research but nothing replaces hard work and hitting the books.
Date: 9/22/2002 10:06:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    I agree. I'll also say that the ability to do web searchs for information can take the place of owning encyclopoedias or having to go to the library. Those are legitimate reasons to be on the computer while doing homework.
Date: 9/22/2002 10:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    My mom had this really nice set of encyclopedias she tried to sell at an auction. No one would buy them. Eventually they just gave them away. Computers have pretty much made encyclopedias obsolete. In my school days I used them constantly.
Date: 9/22/2002 10:18:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Yeah, I used them too.
Date: 9/22/2002 10:21:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    For some reason, I just thought about what it was like before there were very many Zerox machines and we had to use carbon paper. I didn't see my first microwave oven until I was fifteen. I was working in a restaurant as a waiter at the time. I don't know if anybody had them in there homes at that time. I don't remember ever seeing any advertised. God, I feel old!
Date: 9/22/2002 10:21:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Oh yeah, in school they used those horrible mimeograph machines which made those smudgy, old copies with the purple ink.
Date: 9/22/2002 10:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    A big AMEN!!
Date: 9/22/2002 11:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 59876    it is okay to ask for help, but i saw those lists of questions too and it looked like peeps trying to get other usmers to do their lhomework for them. okay this is reaally stupid lol, but a couple of years ago my daughter needed help with a report so i took her to the library. i hadn't been to the library in 7 or 8 years maybe longer. we were both trying to find relative info and i was whispering out of the corner of my mouth, grittin my teeth "where is the card catalog?" and she's like " i don't know" there was no way i was gonna ask and look like an idiot lol. it turns out there was no card catalog like i remembered, it was computerized! you should have seen the looks i got when i asked! i about died of embarrassment! lol
Date: 9/23/2002 3:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 35720    Well that was really rude of that person to not thank you. No, I don't particularly like seeing those posts, but I don't let them bother me.. I just don't reply.
Date: 9/23/2002 5:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 20016    The internet wasn't around when I was in school. If I had a problem I would either figure it out myself or ask my mom for help. It wasn't because of being lazy though! lol
