1972: an eight year-old boy takes off walking to school, which is only a couple of blocks away from his home, where he lives along with his parents & older brother. On this day, he will vanish. This has happened thousand's of times in America, it's the rippling tragedy that unfolds as years pass. It's the way that any small glimmer of joy is snatched away as quickly as it would appear. Most 8 year-olds that disappear without a trace, and as years fade, they don't come back home- it results in broken hearts and nightmares. Most don't have a happy ending............
Steven blended in with the bricks and concrete streets. The dirty windows and bustling city sounds blanketed his innocence from most of the eyes, but the eyes of a monster and his accomplice. The only person to find fascination and interest in Steven and his journey to elementary school, on this particular day, just happened to be LeRoy Parnell, a convicted child molester & released to molest again. He drives by the boy, meanwhile his partner opens his door and scoops up Steven. Just like that, a child is missing and noone has seen anything............
Steven endured eight years of mental, sexual, and physical abuse at the hands of Parnell, who by the way recieved a 3-5 year sentence for his atrocious acts against this child. Steven was told that his parents died in a car wreck. When he began to rebel and seeked the real truth, he was told that his parents didn't want him and that was why they wasn't trying to find him. When his abductor/kidnapper/molester/pedophile/predator/rapist (whatever you prefer) went out and scooped up another young child eight years after Parnell had stolen him off of the street- Steven Stayner, grabbed the child and finally made his escape. Overnight he went from kidnapped 8 year old boy to l5 year-old "hero", his life as a young slave to a liar and a mentally ill pervert, locked up inside. This story, like I said, has no happy ending. Once his father realized the shocking nature of the acts that Parnell committed against his little boy- he felt different towards Steven. He unwittingly pushed a l5 year-old, troubled son into the background, where he had already been for eight miserable years. The void his disappearance left, after he was abducted, was filled in part by his handsome and quiet brother, Cary Stayner. In a way, finding his way back home seemed to cause strife and grief, it was gutwrenching for him to think that him being found, after 8 years, could be so detrimental to his already crumbling family...........
The child molester who poisoned the mind of Steven Stayner, exposed him to alchohol, homosexuality, drugs, sex, and abuse- is partly responsible for an eruption of blood, self-destruction, and pain. Some of the pain and misery, lasting from 1972 until this very minute. When he did finally find his way home, unfortunately the new afflictions and habits he had both witnessed and formed- followed him home. Let's say, Steven may have walked out of his parents home an innocent and precious 8 year old boy, but now he was a l5 year old, on the verge of l6- drinking and doing drugs in an attempt to block out the years in between. He wasn't the same person and this created a lonliness that Steven could & would never overcome. Steven found someone to love, someone to love him back, had a beautiful baby, and was finally getting some closure and getting a chance to experience happiness, when he died in a tragic motorcycle accident...
When Steven had the spotlight glare, shining everywhere he turned, it was common to see his mother, father, and brother, Cary, standing somewhere in the background. As the media circus surrounded his little brother, whose claim to fame was being kidnapped, began to build, the anger in Cary slower festered and in one particular shot- you can actually see a glare from Cary, staring coldly into the camera, as he disappears from view. It was at this moment in time, that the violence began to flash in the mind of Cary Stayner. He locked this anger inside of himself for 20 years, and like I said, until it turned into a volcanic like eruption that exploded at Yosemite National Park in 2000, when he could no longer control his thoughts and twisted dillusions.
Cary Stayner, a rugged mountain man, with movie-star looks and charcoal colored eyes. A 41 year-old handy man at the Cedar Lodge, El Portal, California. Quiet and so unassuming that he fooled most everyone, giving very little insight into his dark mind. He could have had any girl he wanted, but his obsessions didn't include the wife, house, dog, kids, and picket fence. The truth about what makes Cary Stayner click would be well concealed, until February, 2000, when 3 people vanished, from where-else? The Cedar Lodge. Three unsuspecting tourists, visiting Yosemite, for a weekend of leisure and out of love for the park. They pick a hotel, where above the lodge lives Cary Stayner, in an apartment, and the general labor and maintenence of this hotel? Cary Stayner. On this night, Cary is hearing voices and messages from the television, telling him to "do the job." He used the same method as the BOSTON STRANGLER, "I'm here to fix something routine." Once inside the hotel room of Carole Sund (42), Juli Sund (15), and friend of the Sund family Silvina Pelossio(16), Stayner strangled Silvinia in the bathtub. He roamed around the females room, finally deciding to put Carole Sund in the trunk of her red 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix, then he raped Juli for hours. After sexually assaulting the l5 year-old, he whisked her away from the Cedar Lodge. He carried Juli, like a Groom carries a Bride over the threshold- to a lonely, isolated vista point near Lake Don Pedro, pledged his love, then slit her throat so viciously, that he nearly capitated her, as the sun lightened the sky. He caught a cab back to the Cedar Lodge, where he loaded the body of Silvinia Pelossio into the trunk of the Grand Prix. The car would be found over 2 months later, burnt with 2 charred bodies in the trunk......
The police & FBI questioned, in a routine formality, and released Cary Stayner. The long list of suspects in the triple homicide didn't include Stayners name, but it was a list marred by stereotypes. In defense of the investigative authorities who worked the murders of Carole Sund & the two girls, Cary was clean cut, had no criminal record, no record of violence, had an impeccable record at The Cedar Lodge, where he was employed as 'handy-man'. EXPERTS PROFILE OF "CARY STAYNER": A person with an enduring preoccupation with the creature 'BIGFOOT', and the prophecies of Nostradamus. Nightmares of dismembered heads, the lack of empathy toward others, the violent sexual fantasies of child rape, the obsessive hair-pulling & more. A stew of 'disorders' such as pedophilia, voyeurism, social disfunction, mild autism, & a family tree laden with sexual & mental abuse.
Three weeks after excluding Stayner as a suspect in the disappearances of 3 tourists, Cary Stayner had become like a dog with the taste of blood in it's mouth, he wanted to carry out another one of his depraved fantasies. He brutally butchered Yosemite resident, employee of the Yosemite Institute, and naturalist- Joie Ruth Armstrong, cutting off her head in what was a gruesome battle. This was the evening of July 21st,2000. It was after the Armstrong murder, Stayner emerged as the lead suspect in the Armstrong case, and after searching his truck and his apartment above the Cedar Lodge, he also became the lead suspect in the Sund/Pelosso homicides. When the police showed up at the Cedar Lodge to arrest Cary Stayner, he had already checked into the Laguna Del Sol Nudists' Colony. When the manager was watching the news on television and recognized Stayner's photo. He immediately contacted the FBI.
Steven Stayners abduction in 1972 was the beginning of an unhappy life for Steven that ended in an ironic death, emotionally scarred Cary, who also was molested by a relative at a young age, and all of this, mixed in with 25 years of strange and dark thoughts and desires- leads to all of this murder......
