A man accused of the stabbing death of a woman, who worked at an abused woman's shelter, pled guilty on Friday to her murder. Rufus Lee Stancil, 52, admitted to repeatedly stabbing Mary Carmen Payne, 56, on April 24, 2001, after a dispute over hospital bills. Reportedly they had had a relationship that she had broken off earlier that day.
Stancil, who is already serving a life sentence in North Carolina for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and attempted murder, was sentenced by Atlantic Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Robert Russell to life in prison. The North Carolina conviction was apparently for a 1998 attack on a different ex-girlfriend.
According to prosecutor Lou Groover, Stancil will serve his sentence in North Carolina.
"He'll never see the light of day again," Groover said.
Stancil was wearing a Liberty County Jail orange jump suit and leg irons in court and spoke softly when addressed by Russell.
"How do you want to plead?" Russell asked.
"Guilty," Stancil replied.
He had already admitted his guilt to investigators.
He said he and Payne were having an argument over the payment of some hospital bills. They left the scene of the argument in separate cars. He hit the back of her car with his and then "she pulled off and I pulled off," Stancil said.
"I went out to talk to her and we started arguing," he continued. "I stabbed her," he finally admitted after being questioned by Russell.
Payne was found in her car on Hwy. 196 East later that evening. She had multiple stab wounds.
