Miss France boycotts the Miss World competition over Nigerian woman's impending stoning...

The reigning Miss France has said she will boycott the Miss World pageant in Nigeria in protest at a death by stoning sentence given to a woman there for having sex outside of marriage.

Sylvie Tellier told France-Inter radio that she felt a moral responsibility to pull out of the November 30 event in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

Last month, an Islamic court in northern Nigeria rejected single mother Amina Lawal's appeal against a stoning sentence for having sex outside of marriage.

The sentence is scheduled to be carried out in 2004 after she finishes weaning the baby.

Tellier said she was "aware that (her) boycott was not going to alter the course of the world," but it could alter the Miss World pageant. She called on other beauty queens to follow her lead.

**Per CNN News...

Kudos to her for standing up for what she thinks is right... I think all of them should boycott the thing, and make a strong statement against stoning anyone in this day and age.

Date: 9/7/2002 8:04:00 PM  ( Admin )   Stoning is murder..
Date: 9/7/2002 8:14:00 PM  ( Admin-JGB )   I agree it is horrible, it is murder and it seems very wrong to me...
Date: 9/7/2002 8:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 5886    It's just Capital Punishment with alot of rocks. They've been executing people that way for thousands of years. After all, it's the Jews who started it all since the Old Testament shows stoning to be the primary method of execution for crimes like "disobeying thy mother and thy father" and such things.
Date: 9/7/2002 8:24:00 PM  ( Admin-JGB )   and because it has been done "forever" does that make it ok? Don't we know better than that yet?
Date: 9/7/2002 8:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 55376    It is not death by stoning that bothers me near as much as capital punishment for adultery. And, of course, if this had been a married man there would have been no punishment.Og
Date: 9/7/2002 8:36:00 PM  ( Admin-JGB )   og that too amazes me... good point!
Date: 9/7/2002 10:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 55376    If I was the judge I would award the title to Miss France for actually taking action and being willing to sacrifice for her beliefs.
Date: 9/8/2002 12:22:00 AM  From Authorid: 12341    I did a similar post about a year and half ago, you may be interested in the posts and comments. http://www.unsolvedmysteries.com/usm68986.html
Date: 9/8/2002 4:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 32806    Hmm USA has state executions as well, does the method make it anymore right? All state murders should be stopped whether by stones, lethal injection, gassing or electrocution, they are all barbaric crimes.
Date: 9/8/2002 5:01:00 AM  From Authorid: 10146    Why? In this day and age, when people have sex outside of Marriage. Is it done differently?
Date: 9/8/2002 6:53:00 AM  ( Admin-JGB )   interesting comments peeps... first I do not believe in the death penalty for any reason, none the less for some infraction that was not in the rhelm of an "eye for an eye"... second in this day and age, there is still a HUGE double standard, notice the man that impregnated her is not in any danger of death for his action out of wedlock... Seems wrong to take a persons LIFE for an indescrition decided by the NEW law adoped in that country in 1999.
Date: 9/8/2002 8:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 42074    wow, that's a little harsh, don't u think?
Date: 9/8/2002 9:08:00 AM  ( Admin-JGB )   a little harsh? lol ya I would say it is a little harsh.
Date: 9/8/2002 5:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 8428    if they want to protest, then let them.... but i dont believe that the Nigerians should change their laws.
Date: 9/8/2002 6:01:00 PM  ( Admin-JGB )   PePe I guess I am just happy at this point that someone with their moment in the spotlight is speaking out against this inhumane newly adopted "law".
Date: 9/8/2002 6:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 8428    hey cant get anymore in the spotlight than to speak out against what many feel horrible.
Date: 9/8/2002 7:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 11721    ok and are they gonna go round up all the boys and do this to them too this sexist crap makes me so mad and what a disgusting way to rid someone of their life i can't believe taht there aren't more contestants pulling out of the pagent! boycott boycott!
