Ways to avoid lumps

Last month I had my 2nd out-patient surgery to remove benign solid lumps. Since my mom had breast cancer I decided they should be removed. Since this was my 2nd surgery and something I DO NOT want to do again, I asked my doctor what I could do. This is what she told me: 1. Minimal or no caffiene. 2. No underwire bras. 3. Make sure bras are not too tight. 4. No hormones such as birth-control pills and estrogen. 5. No more than 800 IU (international units) of Vitamin E each day as a preventative. She also told me if a new preventative came out she would let me know. She is a 5 year survivor of breast cancer. I think that is the best kind of doctor to have. Breast cancer is very serious and benign lumps like my mom's can turn cancerous as they grow. I want to do everything I can to educate women about this issue and the men who love them.

Date: 9/7/2002 10:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 26452    This is a good post, but I wanted to ask, whats wrong with an underwire bra?
Date: 9/8/2002 5:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 46800    I am at high risk for all that stuff well everything. I am a walking time bomb. Thanks for the info.. All I have are underwire bra's.
Date: 9/8/2002 10:44:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49150    She didn't speficy why an underwire wasn't good, maybe it puts pressure on the softer tissue, causing iritation and resulting lumps. Thats just my guess though. As to the repies, I really don't mind not getting many as long as people are a little more informed. I guess it isn't so embarassing for me since I've been thru the possiblity twice.
Date: 9/8/2002 4:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 10245    I have fibro-cystic breast disease as does my mother... she's had several lumps removed and/or aspirated... so far, so good... none have been cancerous. I haven't found any lumps, other than obvious cysts. My Grandmother beat breast cancer sometime in the 50's only to have it return 13 years later in her lung. My aunt went through a masectomy last year... her 2nd bout with cancer... I firmly believe that none of us can be reminded enough to do those monthly exams and make sure you have that annual physical. Our lives may depend on it. Thanks for the public service announcement
