My first College Comp essay is called "Organized Religion is a Necessity" by HaqZombie

I recently started attending NorthEast Iowa Community College in my hometown of Dubuque, Iowa. My first class of the day is College Comp 1. In it, we recieved our first assignment, a first draft of an essay. I decided on organized religion. For it, we can use opinions of others. So I decided on posting a story on USM to get others opinions. Here's what I plan on using in the first draft:

Organized religion is a necessity not only in today's world, but also in the past. Now, regardless whether you believe in this or not, I believe that it is necessary in this world. People need something to believe in, whether it be a God, Goddess, or many Gods. Why? I believe for many reasons. First of all, they need something that they can look up to, something that they can believe that they are a part of, something more than just themselves. I also believe they use religion as a tool to relieve themselves of the always relentless Death. People are afraid that one day, out of the blue, life as they know it will cease to exist. That frightens people. So there always has to be a continuance, after death, there is eternal life. Think about it. Eternal life...so only THIS life ends, not the next one. So you only have to worry about death once. Not too shabby.

Now, whether I agree with these religions is not the point. The point is is that organized religion, however far-fetched or outrageous some may sound, is necessary. Why? Because without it, man would be in chaos.

Well, what do you think? Of course this is only a summary, and I will go into much more detail when I write the actual first draft. But the reason I wrote this is because I need opinions. Different viewpoints. Well, whoever reads this, please post your thoughts. The more viewpoints I have, the better this essay will be. Thank you.

Date: 8/26/2002 11:24:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 31997    I'm sorry but the question was not whether you hate religion or not, the question was whether you think that it's necessary in people's lives?
Date: 8/26/2002 11:44:00 AM  From Authorid: 53500    I believe yes. I think it gives people a good moral code, and a divine power to judge and either bless or punish them. Anarchy doesn't work, plain and simple, and mankind is SO flawed it is ridculous to think we can truly rule ourselves. Look at all the countries under a dictatorship. They are an absolute disaster. Now, are there nice, well mannered people who don't have religion? Sure. But I believe there's a point in EVERYONE's life when "other" questions are posed that go beyond mankind. Call it God Concious or whatever, I think there are things which mankind can't fill. Questions about life, death, after life, things we can't explain. On a sort of non religious note, I think it is good when people have something in common. Say, people all going to a rock concert, they are united under one thing, as usually, things run smoothly. (and I've been to some rough concerts with out incidents) Well, hope this helps, I'm trying to keep it open to religion in general and not pick out any specifics. Best of luck, SUEDE

Date: 8/28/2002 8:29:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 31997    I agree completely Suede...however, not everybody, even church-believers, follow that moral code you are talking about. Even priests don't follow it. Those sexual abuse charges....stuff like that. And I know several people who don't follow it either. Anyway, thanks for replying.
Date: 8/28/2002 9:34:00 AM  From Authorid: 53500    Yea, those are human flaws. When looking at religion, look at it's doctrine's. I've never found a religion that has child abuse as a doctrine. So in your essay, I would stick to doctrines or the teachings of religions. If you must include some humans, I wouldn't go too far beyond the "founder" of a religion. Basically, religion seems to answer questions that can't be answered otherwise. After life is a big one. Best of luck with it, SUEDE
