5 year old boy burried alive by friends ! ~Belgian UPDATED

A 5 year old boy was found dead in a day care centre yesterday (21/08/2002)after he had been burried as a game by his friends in de sand area. They left him there to die. This happened in a town near my home town.

The people taking care of the kids, hadn't registered him when his mom had dropped him off yesterday morning. So by lunch time, they thought all kids were counted for and the boy wasn't missed until one of the other kids asked where he was. After a search (which took some time) they found him in a pile of sand.

Rescue workers were not able to revive him. An authopsy showed that he was suffocated.

What a way to go, I have two kids myself of about the same age, who also are a day care centre at the moment, I think I would loose my mind if something like this would happen to either one of them.

***UPDATE***

It was found out that the boy was put face down. The kids who were 'playing' with him thought it would be 'fun' to try and burry him. He kept still because he thought his friends would get him out again. But when the hole collapsed they panicked and instead of warning one of the adults, they said nothing because 'they didn't want to get into trouble'.

A special police interrogation team has questioned the kids and has come to the conclusion that it was a stupid, tragic accident. Yeah right....

The day care centre was closed for a couple of days, and when it reopened, a lot less kids were brought in. Parents and personnel have started a petition, because they claim that they do not have enough money and / or resources to provide enough staff to keep an eye on each and every child. Year right... Why didn't they limit the number of kids then ?

This makes me soooo mad. Where is the world going to when money is more important than the safety of our children ?

Date: 8/22/2002 2:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 52746    That's a dreadful story. Poor little mite and his poor parents.
Date: 8/22/2002 3:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 54570    No this should not have happened to a five year old. Accidents do happen. SmoknJoe
Date: 8/22/2002 3:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 160    Crazy things keep happening. Day cares take on a lot of responsibility with all of the kids that they are charged with. In the United Sates there have been a few instances where day care workers (as well as parents) have "forgotton" they had small children or babies strapped in car seats and have left them for hours. These children cannot survive the heat that cars can get to, and often these kids die a slow death. Any time I hear of a child dying as a result of negligence I want to scream. They are our most precious resource.
Date: 8/22/2002 3:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 50435    That would be a terrible way to go. Suffocation is second on my list of worst ways to die after burning. Are these kids not monitored? If I was dishing out the cash for daycare I would expect that my kids would be constantly watched. The amount of time it would take to bury a child in the sand is WAY longer than I would expect my child to remain without an eye on him/her. That's just terrible...
Date: 8/22/2002 3:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 1799    god, that is horrible...
Date: 8/22/2002 4:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 20793    omg. Thats so sad! Poor little boy love,
Date: 8/22/2002 5:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 45628    I'm just curious how they burried him that deep that he couldn't get out....and where were the childcare workers when it happened? you would think someone seen what was going on...This is so terrible....poor kid and family....
Date: 8/22/2002 5:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 38278    That's terrible.
Date: 8/22/2002 5:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 58078    If my child went to that day care I would pull them out of there so fast. How could they not register him. They would have the biggest lawsuit ever. I would try to shut them down. I mean all morning none of the workers saw the boy and realized he wasn't there after lunch. Makes no sense to me. And where the heck were the workers when they were buring him. My heart and prayers go out to that poor family. That is such a shame. *ItalianPrincess*
Date: 8/22/2002 5:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 15677    it just goes to show u that even those these centers try they cant always watch every kid so sad(
Date: 8/22/2002 6:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 28020    OMG that is terribal! Poor Kid!
Date: 8/22/2002 6:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 28020    What did they do to the kids that burried him? They should go to Juvinial hall!
Date: 8/22/2002 7:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 54196    What kind of idiot leaves their kid at a daycare center without REGISTERING them? And this has nothing to do with the kids OR the daycare center!
Date: 8/22/2002 7:14:00 AM  From Authorid: 54196    Er, unless it was the daycare center that didn't register him...kinda ambiguous there...
Date: 8/22/2002 7:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 17275    How scarey, kids can be so cruel tho at 5yrs old I don't think they realize someone can die by burying them this way!
Date: 8/22/2002 7:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 36538    Oh my gosh that's horrible.
Date: 8/22/2002 7:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 54532    Oh what a terrible thing to happen to such a person. I think that the program should have a better registration system.

Date: 8/22/2002 7:34:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 7672    I ageree to all of the above, also over here people are filled with disbelief. I guess the kid must have been knocked out or something, because I think my kids would scream the longs out of their body.
Or perhaps they were digging a hole and it collapsed when the boy fell into it. Details are not yet 100% clear. I'll post them as soon as I know more...

Date: 8/22/2002 9:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 160    When you are being crushed by something like the sand in this case with every breath your lungs retsrict more and more. So that in the end you can not get a deep breath or any at all. Thats what happenes when a snake that constricts first does, he sqeezes so that you are unable to get a breath in. So this little boy would not have been able to scream. I am sorry if this sounds harsh, it is a terrible freak accident and the parents must be suffering terribly. And my heart goes out to them.
Date: 8/22/2002 9:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 61811    daycare people no offense but can be dumb. they should have been watching the kids and if they were this wouldn't have happened!?! ~*JACKIE*~
Date: 8/22/2002 9:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 61830    I have to say that is a bit rediculous.... How could you not notice a bunch of kids burying someone in the sand area!!! OMG! I must admit I too think I would go berzerk... I really just can't imagine.
Date: 8/22/2002 10:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 48527    eep! kids would actually do that?
Date: 8/22/2002 11:00:00 AM  From Authorid: 14272    Who was SUPPOSED to be watching the kids? I mean, accidents happen but, this? This is a horrible tragedy that could have easily been avoided with some supervision.
Date: 8/22/2002 11:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 53836    this is why I am a stay at home mom regardless of financial struggles...this is aweful and my heart goes out to the little boy's family...dumb___kids~SpaceCase
Date: 8/22/2002 11:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 53836    I worked in a daycare...it was manditory to sign all kids in and we also did head counts regularly...I can't picture the teachers actually ignoring children that long...even after-schoolers...I think that daycare will most likely be shut down for these reasons alone~SpaceCase
Date: 8/22/2002 4:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 35821    that is very very sad!!! but I may say that it was the daycare center's fault for not doing their job immediately, by registering him. I am afraid to put my child in a day care center, with all the crazy stories you hear. There is no excuse for any of it and it just makes me sick listening to it. Those poor children suffer for the lack of adults responsibility.
Date: 8/22/2002 6:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 19927    45628......it is VERY hard to move once your buried in sand. i remember when i was little, i went to the beach with my playmates and they buried me in sand up to my head..and i couldn't even move a finger. So that poor little boy couldn't dig his way out due to the weight of the sand on top of him....that is a HORRIBLE way to die! (imagine your lungs filling up with sand instead of water)
Date: 8/22/2002 8:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 7574    yikes...that's sooo sad
Date: 8/22/2002 9:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 19173    Wow! this is really sad.
Date: 8/26/2002 11:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 26598    This is rotten, friends like that who needs enemies.
Date: 8/27/2002 6:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 59876    what an awful story! poor little angel must have been so scared! i also worked in childcare, and by law the parents had to sign their children in and the staff had to sign them out to school, staff signed them back in after school, and parents signed them back out to go home. that is alot of tracking just on paper. i agree that someone should have noticed what these kids were doing and they were not supervised well because by law here in ca, at least, a child must be in sight of a teacher at all times except when they are like in the bathroom. that includes being watched when walking to the bathroom if it is in a separate building, the drinking fountain, another room, the child must be escorted. i would say surely someone saw this child being dropped off, but plenty of times we had kids "just show up suddenly" because their parents didn't want to have to get out of the car and sign them in. doheney
