Only dim rays of light cast out by the headlights of the green Suburban lighted the dark roads. They seemed to flow from the vehicle effortlessly, only to be confronted by a solid wall of darkness that was only slightly penetrable. Shadows crept into what light was permitted, making the road appear to come alive.
Each curve in the road seemed to rise off the mountainside and leap down into deep ravines of untamed evil, only to clime back up the steep slopes in an unnatural fury and speed. The twisting roads appeared to rise above the vehicle in deep mouths of darkness, swallowing them up and spiting them out again.
The darkness alone was enough to scare a person. But the rain.... the rain was exceptionally terrifying and tore from the sky in vicious sheets of anger, forming an alliance with the evils of the road. Pools of water formed in crevices of the road and rain slashed against the windshield so hard and fast the wipers could not keep up. Rain pushed and ripped at the tires, using inhuman power to slam the car into its evil grip.
I would always know that the two lives lost that night were not result of pure accident. They were victim of an indescribable evil force. What I did not know, and chose not to think of, was the fact that it would soon come after me.
