There are hidden significances in the names used in NGE... No, I don't mean the Surnames like Ikari or Ayanami, but the Given/Christian names of the characters, like Yui & Rei.
Yeah, yeah, I know that the Japanese Phonetic alphabet of Katakana is used for ALL of the Given/Christian names in NGE. BUT! Have any of you taken the time to check out the meanings of the Kanji characters that CAN be pronounced as the names?
For the ones I've checked (Yui & Rei), it's extremely interesting! Especially since the dictionary I used, the 'New Nelson, Japanese-English Character Dictionary', ALSO lists various compound characters & phrases that are based on the main character!
(Extra info, the dictionary is published by 'Tuttle' books, otherwise known as 'Charles E. Tuttle Publishing.' The edition I have is the 1997 fully revised edition by John H Haig, based on the Classic Edition by Andrew N. Nelson. ISBN 0-8048-2036-8. It costs an arm & a leg with 1600 pages, over 7000 main-entry characters & over 70,000 character compounds & phrases.)
Anyway, there are 2 Kanji that can be pronounced as 'Yui' in the dictionary. I'll show the Kanji character, its character number in the Dictionary, its meaning, & then show phrase compounds below it... Please note, that due to the usual problems with dialects & Etc, there may be several different ways of saying things using various Kanji - I'm showing meanings from the Dictionary, with an added comment or two where I feel it may be relevant...
? 0831 Yui - only, merely, solely, simply. Tadaima - here I am, I just got back, I am home (EOE significance?) Yuishinron - idealism (Gendo's not bad... Just misunderstood...) Yuigateki - egoistic (Wai! My Unit's Number 1!) Yuigadokuson - feeling of supremacy (I can break any Angel's Sorry butt) Yuiriron - rationalism (Hey! Since I built Unit 1, I can Pilot it!) Ii tosh*te - willingly, meekly. Iidakudaku tosh*te - quite willingly, readily, submissively, meekly. (Re the last two items... genetic traits passed onto Rei via Yui's DNA?)
? Kanji 6115 Yui - leave behind, bequeath, save, reserve. Yuigon - will, testament, last request (Well, since she IS gone...) Yuigonsho - will, testament (Yui's gone so, Gendo gets everything?) Yuimotsu - keepsake, inheritance, bequest (Unit 1, a Keepsake?) Yuikun - dying instructions (Yui... Kun? Gender change joke imminent...) Yuikai - dying instructions (Rei? "Look After" that 8!+<# Naoko for me...) Yuigai - remains, corpse, dead body (Live Fast, Die Young, & leave a beautiful... err... liquid solution...)
Kanji 6115 is included in MANY other phrases that have seeming relevance to Yui Ikari & her Life/Death/Lifes work. Such as.
Ishi - posthumous child ('Rei' numbers I, II, & III...). Ibun - literary remains (All her lab notes) Ikou - works following the deceased (Unit 1 did what Shinji couldn't) Irei - dying orders (Gendo... Look after Shinji for me) Ish*tsu - loss (What Gendo & Shinji felt) Ishin - surviving retainer (Rei? Gendo's useless, look after Shinji for me...) Ison - extant, still existing (Somewhere inside Unit 1, over the rainbow) Iden - heredity (Shouldn't Shinji be a genius like his mom) Idenshi kougaku - genetic engineering (What Yui did, when living) Idenshi chiryou - gene therapy (If I absorb Shinji, I can rebuild him) Idenshi shindan - gene diagnosis (Da*n, he's worse than I first thought) Idensha sousa - gene manipulation (Oh well, here goes nothing) Ito - posthumous plan, person's last wishes (I'm dead? No more Taxes!) Ishi - historic ruins (Geofront comment, post EOE...) Iri - unexploited source of wealth (Yui's secret diaries) Ishi - dying wish ( I wish Gendo was piloting Unit 1 instead of me) Iji - orphan (Tragic secret in Yui's hidden past?) Iji - reminiscences (What Shinji saw inside Unit 1 when absorbed) Isan - miscalculation (See Gendo? Piloting Unit 1 is Easy! I... Whoops!) Iko - a lingering odour reminding one of the giver of clothes, etc (Hey Shinji? Did it ever smell like Rei in there, even when she HADN'T been in there?)
Plus heaps more along similar lines!
Then of course, there's Rei... But as there are a LOT of Kanji that can be pronounced as Rei, I'll only include a handful of them...
? 0121 Rei - order, command, ordinance, law decree. Rei (suru) - to command, to order to dictate. Reifujin - Mrs-, Lady-, Madam-, your wife. Reishoku - servile looks (Rei's general attitude...) Reimei - good reputation, fame (As Ritsuko said, "She's a nice girl...") Reishi - your elder sister (Shinji... there's something you should know...) Reijo - your daughter (Err... Gendo? About that *cough* doujinshi...) Reido - your home/your mother (Shinji thought she'd be a great mother...) Reishi - heir (Rei says 'This is all I get?") Reikei - your wife, his wife. Mrs- (The future Mrs Shinji Ikari?)
? 0149 Rei - actor. Reijin - court musician, minstrel (Give her a Fender Strato-Caster & stand back! Can this Chick Wail on an Axe or what!)
? 0336 Rei - companion (She's only interested in a Platonic relationship, that's why she didn't act as 'Ryoko' from Tenchi Muyo would have, during the ID Card Delivery scene...)
? 0419 Rei - cool, cold (The Original Ice Maiden!) Reiko - cold light, luminescence. Reiketsukan - cold-blooded person. Reishou - cynicism. Reitan - indifference, coolness. Reizen - indifference Reisei - calmness, serenity, composure. (How many of the above seem to apply?)
? 0528 Rei - Reikou suru - enforce strictly, carry out. Reisei - diligence. (Gendo: Rei, Go Forth & Maim! And if you can't do that, then just ram an N2 Mine down its throat! Rei: Yes, Sir! Sir? How Far... do I ram the N2 down its throat?)
? 0948 Rei - prison. Reigo - prison (If Rei's body is a receptacle for a soul, is that soul there of its own free will?)
? 1812 Rei - wise. Reiri - cleverness (She knows more than she lets on... Like how she memorised the floor plans of the NERV Base...)
? 2051 Rei - return, turn back, revert to, reject, go against (THAT scene in EOE anyone?)
? 2203 Rei - screw, twist, distort, be perverse, parody (*Cough*Cough*... Open license for Doujinshi writers or what?)
? 4061 Rei - salute, bow, ceremony, thanks, appreciation, remuneration. Reishiki - etiquette, manners. (Definitely the sort of girl who'd say 'Pardon My Fist!' before beating the living tar out of a rival for Shinji's affections...)
? 4662 Rei - antelope. (Well, we all know she's a 'Dear'>
? 5294 Rei - dragonfly, moon moth. (Now you know why there's so many illustrations of Rei with a moon in them...)
? 6490 Rei - servant, prisoner, follower, criminal. Reiju - slavery. Reizoku - subordination, dependency. Reizokumin - oppressed people. (Criminal? Well if Gendo can accuse Shinji of misusing an EVA, what will he say to Rei's use of Lillith in EOE? And as for 'slavery', is this a subtle design reason behind the plug suit's 'manacle-like' wrist constructs, & 'collars'?)
? 6524 Rei - zero, nothing, cipher, fall, spill, overflow. Reii - zero (She has nothing...) Reika - below zero (Let me rephrase that, she has LESS than nothing...) Reiyo - residue, remnant (Mumbled comment about Yui's remains...) Reido - freezing point (What being near Shinji warms her up to...) Reihai - losing out in love. (Well, Asuka got Shinji... Kind of...) Reisaino - poor peasant. (Comment on the Hovel she calls Home?) Reiraku - ruin, downfall, reduced circumstances (Enough Said?) Reisen - zero fighter. (Reason they call it Unit 0?)
? 6532 Rei - soul, spirit, SPIRITS WHO POSSESS HUMANS. Reidai - visible symbol of the soul (AT Field anyone?) Reiniku - soul & body (She's got both, even if they aren't always together...) Reiki - atmosphere/feeling of mystery (Enough said?) Reisei - divine nature (Well, she's part Angel, & a Really Nice Kid...) Reiseki - the site or aftermath of a miracle (What else would you call it when Asuka survived badmouthing Shinji that time? Especially given what Rei's 'Dummy Plug' did to Touji's EVA?)
? 7026 Rei - beautiful, fine, serene, lovely, graceful, bright & clear. Reijin - beauty, belle. Reishi - beautiful figure. Reiyo - beautiful figure. Reiga - beauty & nobility. Reish*tsu - beauty, charms. Reigan - beautiful face. (So you think the above have NO significance whatsoever to how she's drawn? OR to how popular she is with the Fans?)
? 7049 Rei - many, dark, black. (Well, there are many Rei Clones, & they do live in the dark... Just be thankful she didn't turn to the 'Dark Side'...)
