You wanna see bashing? HERES your bashing!! *TDA*

I'm not really bashing anything just yet, just trying to explain a few things.

I've noticed a lot of Pagans and Christians are getting heat lately over so-called "bashing". Allow me to demonstrate:

Pagan posts story called "The validity of the Bible". In this post, the Pagan author questions the validity of the Bible and offers proofs to back up his OPINION that the Bible is largely false.

Christian posts a story titled "The horrors of ancient Pagans". On this post, the Christian author shows evidence of human sacrifice by ancient Pagans to their Gods, proving Pagans DID perform human sacrifice in ancient times.

Now, does this sound like bashing to you? I think not. I posted a debate for Steven which questioned the validity of the Bible and offered 4 or 5 questions for him to answer concerning Biblical Contradictions. This is NOT bashing, as anyone who knows me knows I have a good deal of respect for Christian theology and the ones who practice it (Its just the fundamentalists of ANY religion that bother me).

I never bashed ANYTHING, I just posted legitimate questions which deserve legitimate answers.

Now lets get down to the bashing. For example:

Pagan: The Christian religion is the most horribly flawed religion in the world! All this "Your going to hell, so NAH!" crap makes me sick! Who do these bozos think they are with their Jesus and their Bibles?

Christian: Well if I don't see those sinful Wiccans in Hell I'll pay for lying! How DARE they believe different than us? They'll be eating Satan Surprise in Hell for their sins!

See this? THIS is bashing. If a Christian told me the Goddess doesn't exist and I'm lost from Gods word, THAT is bashing. If I tell a Christian his/her whole religion is a lie and Christ never existed, THAT is bashing. Bashing has occured on BOTH sides, not all Wiccans do it, not all Christians do it, BOTH of us are guilty.

Not all Christians bash us Wiccans, just like not all of us bash them. Both sides have done it and both are guilty. REGARDLESS of what the ones involved in the religions want to say, Christians HAVE bashed Wiccans and Wiccans HAVE bashed Christians, I have seen it on both sides myself!

You want to question and scrutinize my beliefs? Go right ahead, but don't be surprised if I do it to you. Thats fine. Debating is good you guys, debating religion is fine also, but don't let it turn into another bash-fest, I've seen enough of that for one life.

For those that enjoy a good, DECENT debate, great for you! Your helping USM to re-gain its debating glory. For those that wish to bash or talk down on others religions, you may direct your whining to the nearest brick wall. Some still argue about Burning Times and what not. Guess what? I had ancestors burned there too! I had Christian ancestors persecuted for their beliefs also. What the h*ll are you trying to prove by whining over which religion got killed 600 years ago? All that mess is over, done, and finished. Remember it and keep it from happening again, yes. Debate it over and over and OVER again, no.

Both our religions have been persecuted, not just us Wiccans, not just the Christians. BOTH have been persecuted due to IGNORANCE, the same ignorance that will happen again if people don't open up their minds to other ways of thinking.

Sorry if this is so long and rambling..hehe.

Debate #1: What constitutes "bashing"?

Debate #2: Should we just let sleeping dogs lie?

Debate #3: Think I went over-board on my preaching?

Date: 8/1/2002 12:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 29705    we all have an opinion- no one was there to see whos religion is based on the closest truth. i follow my religion, i don't say hello- are you a christian, wiccan, or other. i judge by actions of the person- not their faith. i would be wrong to bash for that reason. catz_tat
Date: 8/1/2002 12:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 60162    Bashing is when you direct a negetive comment to one person with name calling or even rudeness as far as I am concerned. I pretty much agree with Author 58717, couldnt have said it better myself.
Date: 8/1/2002 1:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 59876    is it okay to direct a comment directly to someone as long as there isn't name calling or rudeness? 1. i think bashing would be assasinating someones character or beliefs. you can disagee with someone's topic/beliefs without being disparaging. name calling, not nice! 2. any topic can be debated even if it's old and irritating it's new to somebody. you could let sleeping dogs lie, but the differences of opinion on the past is what brings us to some of the debated issues being presented now. people will continue to question and learn even if others have moved on. 3. as far as i'm concerned you can write whatever you want. someone will be interested, i was. isn't diversity wonderful? freedom of speech!!! yeah!!! - doheney
Date: 8/1/2002 7:11:00 AM  From Authorid: 48941    1. I feel bashing is when people say something to deliberately hurt another person. Everyone is guilty of this, even me. 2.I agree we should let sleeping dogs lay, I think everyone can try and get along. 3.No, I don't feel you went overboard with this story.
Date: 8/1/2002 8:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 14254    1. Bashing occurs when something is said or written not for the greater good of another, or because the communicator honestly cares for whom he/she is communicating with, but for devious and manipulative reasons, like trying to crush their faith. 2. Most of the time, we should just let sleeping dogs lie. Unfortunately, you have Christians here who feel that God himself crowned them to preach directly to you and tell you "God's Truth", and if you don't listen they either hound you or cut you off completely as "a lost soul". You also have Wiccans here that are are so hung up on their former faith, Christianity, that they can't even write a decent post without targeting Christians and picking a fight...you hear more about how badly they hated/disagreed with the Christian faith than you do about the glories of their new faith. 3. You have not gone overboard. I am glad you posted this so I could comment and say the things I did!
Date: 8/1/2002 8:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 25828    it's nice to debate or discuss religion sometimes but i'm sick to death myself of seeing all the pagan/wiccan/christian arguing posts the past week. i think we should give it a rest for awhile. i guess it's the 'hot' topic right now though
Date: 8/1/2002 8:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 51173    Debate point 1.: I do think you are a bit confused by what bashing really is (although I don't think you are far off the mark). Case in point, your statement "If a Christian told me the Goddess doesn't exist and I'm lost from Gods word, THAT is bashing." ---- Actually, no its not, not when said in that context. That is a simple statement of belief. Now IF IT WERE USED AS A WEAPON, as in "You Wiccans don't believe in Jesus and you're going to Hell!!! BBWWAAAAHHHHH!!!!", then YES that is bashing. It is being turned into a personal attack. Now the other part of your statement in that same paragraph -- "If I tell a Christian his/her whole religion is a lie and Christ never existed, THAT is bashing." might or might not be. Once again context is the key. If you say "Christianity... the whole religion is a lie." That could very well be personal opinion, which we are all entitled to have. If you say "Christianity... the whole religion is a lie and Christ never existed." that WOULD be bashing because it can be proven that He did exist. When undisputable facts are ignored, dismissed, downplayed or ridiculed for the purpose of scoring polemic points, that also is bashing. I cannot prove that the Goddess does not exist nor can you prove she does exist; there are no verifyable objective historical records of her. All proof you have is subjective (based on a spiritual experience), which is fine, especially since we Christians also claim that the only way to prove the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is experiencially. But if someone said Jesus was a myth, based on pagan religious figures, and I came back with proof this wasn't so, and that proof were ignored, that would also constitute bashing, because that individual would them be propalgating a known lie for polemic purposes. Personal attacks are easy to spot and recognize; it is this second, more subtle bashing that I personally get upset about. ---- Debate point 2.: No, when error is encountered, deliberate or accidental, it should be confronted with the truth. ------- Debate point 3.: NOT AT ALL! Like I said you weren't far off on the definition of bashing. And you attempted to confront error with the truth - that should be honored, not denegrated. Good post! Peace, Tom
Date: 8/1/2002 9:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 15033    I love reading Tom's comments. They make the most sense. Cool...
Date: 8/1/2002 10:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 277    I think some people here are taking their debating "TOO" PERSONALLY. WHen a debate is posted expect to be debated. I haven't seen any "bashing". Yet, I have seen "debating". Once everyone stops taking everything so personally maybe a good debate will come out of it without anyone having to wipe tears and take an anger management course.
Date: 8/1/2002 11:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 55376    No one has ever made me angry even when they have bashed me. Get some self-respect people. Og
