If You're Catholic You WIll Not Suffer Eternal Fire

IF YOU WEAR THE BROWN SCAPULAR!!!

In case you have never heard of this the brown scapular is a piece of cloth string with a rectangular piece of cloth with paper on one side at each end of the string. Some Catholics wear them around their neck all the time to prevent from going to Hell. They believe the scapular will allow them into the Kingdom of Heaven...no questions asked.

On one rectangle it has a picture of Mary holding the baby Jesus. Below the picture it says "WHOSOEVER DIES WEARING THIS (BROWN) SCAPULAR SHALL NOT SUFFER ETERNAL FIRE"

On the other rectangle there is a picture of two sacred hearts Above the picture is says "I LOVE THEE OH MOST PRECIOUS SACRED AND IMMACULATE HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY" Then at the bottom it says "PLEASE GUIDE ME"

The following paragraph is some information about where the scapular originated. It was taken from http://www.rc.net/lansing/ctk/cc/ocds1.html

"The Brown Scapular is a Roman Catholic devotion to Mary under her title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. It is worn as a sign of love and devotion for the Mother of God. The Scapular was presented by Our Lady to St. Simon Stock, the Father General of the Carmelite Order, on July 16, 1251. Mary's stated the following promise to him concerning the Scapular: "Whosoever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire...it shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace. Another important aspect of wearing the Scapular is the Sabbatine Privilege. This concerns a promise made by Our Lady to Pope John XXII. In a papal letter he issued, he recounted a vision that he had had. He stated that the Blessed Virgin had said to him in this vision, concerning those who wear the Brown Scapular: "I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory, I shall free, so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting." According to Church tradition, there are three conditions necessary to participate in this Privilege and share in the other spiritual benefits of the Scapular: wear the Brown Scapular, observe chastity according to your state in life, and pray the Rosary. In addition to the Sabbatine Privilege, enrollment in the Brown Scapular also makes a person part of the Carmelite family throughout the world. They therefore share in all of the prayers and good works of the Carmelite Orders. Participation in the Carmelite family also, of course, places you in a special relationship with the Carmelite saints, especially St. Elijah, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Therese of Lisieux, and, most importantly, Our Lady of Mount Carmel."

I was raised Catholic, so this debate is by no means trying to attack any Catholics on their beliefs. However, I have always thought the scapular to be real as a child, a scared kid who thought telling a little fib would send me straight to Hell. So, I wore it to protect me in case I was ever killed. Now, that I am an adult it seems somewhat like a tall tale. It seems like an excuse to run around and do whatever you want and as long as you wear that brown scapular Mary will save you from Purgatory and Hell. I think the only thing that will save you by wearing that scapular is to feel remorse for your sins and to have faith in God. You can have that without wearing a scapular and still get into heaven.

What are your thoughts? Do those who wear the brown scapular have better odds of escaping eternal fire than those who don't wear the brown scapular?

Date: 7/30/2002 2:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 36950    well I am not catholic, I don't wear one and I had never heard of this before. However I will be in heaven, hopefully with you and alot of others here..
Date: 7/30/2002 2:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 55376    Your question shows a distorted image of the scapular. No where in Catholic teachings is it required to wear the scapular in order to get to heaven. Og
Date: 7/30/2002 2:36:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    Thanks, Og, I reworded the question so it doesn't confuse anyone. I wasn't trying to say that the scapular is required to be worn in order to get to heaven. Sorry about that.
Date: 7/30/2002 2:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 59515    dearest hawk, Very interesting comment but would have to agree with Og. There is truly alot more to this beautiful faith of ours. SEE Religious/religions on this site DO CATHOLICS TEACHINGS COTRADICT THE BIBLE. lots of hugs and gods love to you and yours. St Joseph
Date: 7/30/2002 2:54:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    Thanks, St. Joseph. I'll check that out.
Date: 7/30/2002 3:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 54070    Oh, please... I'm Catholic, and those have been debunked by most Catholics anyway... Besides, I like the heat!
Date: 7/30/2002 3:38:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    54070, I'm Catholic too and you're right. You say you like the heat, does that mean you think you'll be more prone to suffer eternal flames than a scapular wearing Catholic?
Date: 7/30/2002 3:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    Good post hawk and I was wondering, about the triangle part of this cloth. I mean wasn't that the symbol for Egypt? The people that were against God?
Date: 7/30/2002 3:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 55376    If you believe in the visions of Mary mentioned, I think you would have to say yes. I think most of the people faithful enough to say the Rosaries and wear a scapular probably have little to fear anyhow. Og
Date: 7/30/2002 3:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 19382    Catholicism worships a mortal woman who had many childeren as "A Vigirn" And the "Mother of God" AND BEFORE GOD!? What'd God say to Moses again about that little thing?
Date: 7/30/2002 4:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 17525    You have much better odds if you ESCAPE the RELIGION! It's pure mental moonshine.....brown scapulars indeed.
Date: 7/30/2002 4:24:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    Thanks, FirstBorn. The shape of the scapular is a rectangle, not a triangle. Could have been the symbol for the people against God in Eygpt, I don't recall. (I'm not exactly the bible scholar...lol!)
Date: 7/30/2002 4:36:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    ShipPagan, hard concept I know. What they teach is Mary was a virgin before Jesus was conceived and after he was born. If she had any children after that then obviosly she wasn't a virgin after that. I don't think Catholics believe she had any other children though. She was chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus, but she isn't put before Jesus. She's not even worshipped. She is acknowledged and respected. It may throw people off because Catholic churches everywhere have statues of Mary for recognization that she was the mother of Jesus without original sin and because she was a virgin. God said "You shall have no other gods before me."
Date: 7/30/2002 4:39:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    Og, I'm not sure if I believe the visions mentioned. I know if I prayed the rosary every day I probably wouldn't have too much fear either. But, considering the fact I haven't prayed the rosary since about 4th or 5th grade I'm not exactly fearless.
Date: 7/30/2002 4:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    Osiris, two of my sisters have escaped the religion because they felt it was "pure mental moonshine". One is now a Baptist and the other a Lutheran. The wearing of the scapular does sound a little hokey.
Date: 7/30/2002 6:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 54070    Sure, I'd like it...with the proper sun block...(I burn easily...lol) ~Kineti-Kid~
Date: 7/30/2002 6:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 54070    Oh, Hawk, she did. Although he's rarely mentioned, and I forgot his name... It was just a ragamuffin sun, that's all...
Date: 7/30/2002 6:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 54070    son*
Date: 7/30/2002 6:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    thanks hawk.
Date: 7/30/2002 7:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    Sounds like another one of those "Too Good to Be True" deals...and as you said-an excuse to do anything. And I highly doubt that God would overlook every other aspect of you just as long as you're wearing a string or whatever it is...seems like propoganda to me.
Date: 7/30/2002 8:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 17525    Wearing this "thing" is no more than superstition. It has the same affect as that little plastic statue of Jesus on the dashboard. It's called a talisman. A rose is a rose is a rose is a brown scapular is a talisman. Childish superstition, left over from the days when the church had power and you were required to believe it. oops, sorry, it's not the "church" it's the "catholics, thats right. ,,,shakes head.... Peace,
Date: 7/30/2002 9:14:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    I'm with you Persephone and Osiris.
Date: 7/30/2002 9:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 60364    Why don't you catholics read your bibles instead of listening to the words of men!!
God's word is final, and Jesus said, "No man shall come to the father but by me"
Salvation is via GRACE not works.. there is nothing we can do to get into heaven, because Jesus already did it for us! Just accept that fact and believe it, repent from your sins, and your in! EASY!
Date: 7/30/2002 9:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    Catholics do read their bibles, but they also believe in things like the scalpular. That's why this is posted in debate. So, I'm assuming you don't think those who wear the brown scapular have better odds of escaping eternal fire.
Date: 7/30/2002 9:28:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    What do you guys think about Pope John XXII vision of the Virgin Mary? Personally, I think it may have been some hype to bring some more faith back to the Catholic church.
Date: 7/30/2002 9:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 22275    I think this is just a superstision and that if anyone wants to go to heaven they need to try to be a good person help others and follow the 10 commandments
Date: 7/30/2002 9:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    The Pope had a vision of the Virgin? News to my eyes...
Date: 7/30/2002 10:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 59515    I personally dont think that wearing a scapular alone will get you to heaven and that's not what the church teaches. Traditional christianity has venerated Mary as the ark of the covenant found Rev12'18 , mother of god made flesh both divine and man. so jesus has marys blood in his vains. i will also add that if jesus followed the law and he did he would honor both MOTHER and FATHER and as christians arent we to imitate christ. About man made traditions The bible alone theory is only about 500 yrs old See protestant refomation. Chritianity was never a religion of the word (BIBLE)but of the word made flesh JESUS. FACT. The church came before the bible and not vice-versa .
Date: 7/30/2002 10:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    Persephone, it was news to my eyes too...
Date: 7/30/2002 10:12:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    59515, "i will also add that if jesus followed the law and he did he would honor both MOTHER and FATHER and as christians arent we to imitate christ." I never thought about it thatway. I like that! I understand just wearing it alone will not get you into heaven, but even in doing the other things it is just a really hard concept for me to follow. Thanks, for your comment. You've shed some light.
Date: 7/30/2002 10:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 59515    Dear shippagan about worshiping statues. You must be speaking of deut 12 about not worshiping graven images but if you were to read on in deut20 god gives the isrealites intructions on how to build the ark and on top they were to make seraphin statues and furthere more were to worship there. So god isnt against woshiping statues but against IDOLOTRY.
Date: 7/30/2002 10:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 59515    Dear 60364, the bible says the church must be one Rom 12;5 Cor 10;17, 12;13. not a collecton of likeminded belivers jesus's church was given perpituity Matt16-18 the gates of hell would not previal against it. The church would make disiples of all nations Matt28. and even scripture even calls the church and not the bible alone "the foundation and pillar of truth"1Tim3;15. The bible alone theory was not believed by the early christians FACT!!!!!Jesus"s church would guide us to all truth John 16 12-13. Furthermore, The authority was given to the church Luke 10;16 and in scripture it says if he does not even listen even to the CHURCH then cast him out as you would a tax collector. Thats authority given by jesus. Whats your authority? the catholic church is the only universal christian church that dates back to biblical times. The bible is church based book not a bible based church.
Date: 7/31/2002 12:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 54987    Osiris said it for me... never heard of scapulars. Scalpels yeah. And brown doesn't do anything for me at all. - Coolade
Date: 7/31/2002 10:44:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    See that's what I don't understand, Coolade. There are green scalpulars too. They mean something else I think. I guess that's why they stress the word "brown". My sister-in-law told me before that the green ones can be used to make someone a better Catholic or something. I don't know if that's right or not. I'll have to look through some search engines.
Date: 7/31/2002 10:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 34476    *wow* I've never heard of this before! I had better get me one of those!!!!! *wink*
Date: 7/31/2002 10:56:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    LOL@Paranoid! I have one from when I was a kid still. Somehow it ended up staying in the bottom drawer of my jewelery box along with an old rosary and wake/funeral prayer cards. It's still there.
Date: 7/31/2002 3:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 48809    I have not one iota of faith that a scapular or anything else will catapult any of us into heaven . We can have no hopes of ever getting there except by our own efforts! No one and no thing can do for us what we are required to do for ourselves! There is not one worldly thing that can do this for us, but we must purify our souls and learn to love one another, and to make ourselves more spiritual! Does it sound reasonable that perhaps someone who had led a life of crime and violence could lay these things aside at the time of death, and be admitted unto the realms of spirit, just because they possessed a scapular? And if this were true, do you think that that would be fair to those who had always honored God and led a good spiritual life? I don't!
