Your question shows a distorted image of the scapular. No where in Catholic teachings is it required to wear the scapular in order to get to heaven. Og |

Thanks, Og, I reworded the question so it doesn't confuse anyone. I wasn't trying to say that the scapular is required to be worn in order to get to heaven. Sorry about that. |

54070, I'm Catholic too and you're right. You say you like the heat, does that mean you think you'll be more prone to suffer eternal flames than a scapular wearing Catholic? |

Good post hawk and I was wondering, about the triangle part of this cloth. I mean wasn't that the symbol for Egypt? The people that were against God? |

If you believe in the visions of Mary mentioned, I think you would have to say yes. I think most of the people faithful enough to say the Rosaries and wear a scapular probably have little to fear anyhow. Og |

Thanks, FirstBorn. The shape of the scapular is a rectangle, not a triangle. Could have been the symbol for the people against God in Eygpt, I don't recall. (I'm not exactly the bible scholar...lol!) |

ShipPagan, hard concept I know. What they teach is Mary was a virgin before Jesus was conceived and after he was born. If she had any children after that then obviosly she wasn't a virgin after that. I don't think Catholics believe she had any other children though. She was chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus, but she isn't put before Jesus. She's not even worshipped. She is acknowledged and respected. It may throw people off because Catholic churches everywhere have statues of Mary for recognization that she was the mother of Jesus without original sin and because she was a virgin. God said "You shall have no other gods before me." |

Og, I'm not sure if I believe the visions mentioned. I know if I prayed the rosary every day I probably wouldn't have too much fear either. But, considering the fact I haven't prayed the rosary since about 4th or 5th grade I'm not exactly fearless. |

Osiris, two of my sisters have escaped the religion because they felt it was "pure mental moonshine". One is now a Baptist and the other a Lutheran. The wearing of the scapular does sound a little hokey. |

Sounds like another one of those "Too Good to Be True" deals...and as you said-an excuse to do anything. And I highly doubt that God would overlook every other aspect of you just as long as you're wearing a string or whatever it is...seems like propoganda to me. |

Wearing this "thing" is no more than superstition. It has the same affect as that little plastic statue of Jesus on the dashboard. It's called a talisman. A rose is a rose is a rose is a brown scapular is a talisman. Childish superstition, left over from the days when the church had power and you were required to believe it. oops, sorry, it's not the "church" it's the "catholics, thats right. ,,,shakes head.... Why don't you catholics read your bibles instead of listening to the words of men!! God's word is final, and Jesus said, "No man shall come to the father but by me" Salvation is via GRACE not works.. there is nothing we can do to get into heaven, because Jesus already did it for us! Just accept that fact and believe it, repent from your sins, and your in! EASY! |

Catholics do read their bibles, but they also believe in things like the scalpular. That's why this is posted in debate. So, I'm assuming you don't think those who wear the brown scapular have better odds of escaping eternal fire. |

I personally dont think that wearing a scapular alone will get you to heaven and that's not what the church teaches. Traditional christianity has venerated Mary as the ark of the covenant found Rev12'18 , mother of god made flesh both divine and man. so jesus has marys blood in his vains. i will also add that if jesus followed the law and he did he would honor both MOTHER and FATHER and as christians arent we to imitate christ. About man made traditions The bible alone theory is only about 500 yrs old See protestant refomation. Chritianity was never a religion of the word (BIBLE)but of the word made flesh JESUS. FACT. The church came before the bible and not vice-versa . |

59515, "i will also add that if jesus followed the law and he did he would honor both MOTHER and FATHER and as christians arent we to imitate christ." I never thought about it thatway. I like that! I understand just wearing it alone will not get you into heaven, but even in doing the other things it is just a really hard concept for me to follow. Thanks, for your comment. You've shed some light. |

Dear shippagan about worshiping statues. You must be speaking of deut 12 about not worshiping graven images but if you were to read on in deut20 god gives the isrealites intructions on how to build the ark and on top they were to make seraphin statues and furthere more were to worship there. So god isnt against woshiping statues but against IDOLOTRY. |

Dear 60364, the bible says the church must be one Rom 12;5 Cor 10;17, 12;13. not a collecton of likeminded belivers jesus's church was given perpituity Matt16-18 the gates of hell would not previal against it. The church would make disiples of all nations Matt28. and even scripture even calls the church and not the bible alone "the foundation and pillar of truth"1Tim3;15. The bible alone theory was not believed by the early christians FACT!!!!!Jesus"s church would guide us to all truth John 16 12-13. Furthermore, The authority was given to the church Luke 10;16 and in scripture it says if he does not even listen even to the CHURCH then cast him out as you would a tax collector. Thats authority given by jesus. Whats your authority? the catholic church is the only universal christian church that dates back to biblical times. The bible is church based book not a bible based church. |

See that's what I don't understand, Coolade. There are green scalpulars too. They mean something else I think. I guess that's why they stress the word "brown". My sister-in-law told me before that the green ones can be used to make someone a better Catholic or something. I don't know if that's right or not. I'll have to look through some search engines. |

I have not one iota of faith that a scapular or anything else will catapult any of us into heaven . We can have no hopes of ever getting there except by our own efforts! No one and no thing can do for us what we are required to do for ourselves! There is not one worldly thing that can do this for us, but we must purify our souls and learn to love one another, and to make ourselves more spiritual! Does it sound reasonable that perhaps someone who had led a life of crime and violence could lay these things aside at the time of death, and be admitted unto the realms of spirit, just because they possessed a scapular? And if this were true, do you think that that would be fair to those who had always honored God and led a good spiritual life? I don't! |
