ok you guys know im not a religous man but ya know i saw george carlin last night and he made a good point about the 10 commandments they should be broken down to "thou shalt always be honest and faithful to thy wife","thou shalt try real hard not to kill" lol i rather take the try real hard part out, and "THOU SHALT KEEP THY RELIGON TO THY SELF!!!" i couldnt agree anymore with the last one do you think that every religon should have that i think so that should be like the freakin golden rule so yeah the debate is,

Should every religon have a rule about keeping your religon to yourself,at church and at home?

Date: 7/22/2002 11:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    no...i am pretty up front about my belief's....but normally, I wait till people ask. I always make the point, what is right for me, is for ME, and they need to find their own path. The only external demonstration I allow myself, is I now have a LOVELY silver pentagram-ring, (little ornate pentagrams-representing the earth/air/fire/water/spirit that composes all life & reality). It is my one outward display...
Date: 7/22/2002 11:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 17525    It would be nice if they had that rule, but right now, with the mainstream religions, they have a rule which says, "get everyone else to join". Obviously written by the Divinely inspired bean-counters though. JMO Peace,
Date: 7/23/2002 12:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 50435    It'll never happen. I have no problem with people being open about their religion. It's when they assume that everyone has the same beliefs as them, religious or not, that I develop a bit of irritance. For the most part, people are of good intentions. But there are the few that for some reason have to push everything up in everyone's face. I also have no problems with people who wish to discuss with me my beliefs vs. theirs. I find that most of the time the discussions are quite enjoyable, for both parties. So I don't have much of a problem with people expressing their beliefs on religion. Just don't assume that I'll go along with what you say should the moment arise...
Date: 7/23/2002 12:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 10146    I feel that " THOU SHALT KEEP THY RELIGION TO THY SELF" should truly be Implemented, only if you are GOD! However, you are not. If you kept it to yourself at church, Then Whats the point of Going there? If you kept these kind of things to yourself, then we wouldnt have to hear your opinion on this matter. So just keep sharing your Religion. I will!
Date: 7/23/2002 12:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 44404    i saw that too. gotta watch about the kind of stock you put in george though. he has some wonderful things to say, but often he makes it hard to take him seriously. i've been watching and listening to his stuff since he was a hippie, and if you check his site you'll see he's been going since early black and white TV. whatever the case, i think that it is important for all people to be vocal and to defend something that is important to them. that's what passion is. taking a stand and making your voice heard. Arguements are good, but arguements at their best are not trying to convert anyone, they are trying to prove a point. And the point to any arguement is to simply win. Be the last one standing and still talking. Carlin, a brilliant orator, is exceptional at that. I think that religions have some brilliant things to say about society, about hope and the preservation of love (overall). Isn't someone trying to share ideas good enough to be heard? I like to share my opinions, so sure others can to. I don't feel that I am at risk of losing control over my own destiny because I allowed an outside influence in. Influences are around us all the time anyway (you do have TV, watch commercials?) so if some one representing a religion wants to speak, why stop him? I don't have to go buy a Honda because the TV said, and I don't have to follow someone elses God because they say so. But I do owe them the opportunity to speak if that is a right I wish to maintain for myself. Thats all I wanted to say in a round about way. interesting post. if you get a chance, watch George Carlin: Playing with Your Head. That is one of my favorites anyway, it was an HBO special in '83 or '86 i think. take care man,
Date: 7/23/2002 12:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 56369    nahh im christian, im gunna open my mouth and spread my words until kingdom come LOL, cos im gunna want my loved ones 2 be standing by myside on that day, and any other special people that I just happened to share with :P I think its apart of freedom of speach, but to ENFORCE, well that would be crossing the line. Im sure nobodys gunna die if someone walked up to them and said "do you know about jesus?' Or 'Are you in to wicca?' Knowledge is power, lol and I am not gunna infringe my rights to learn and aquire such power :P Peace-honeysoul
Date: 7/23/2002 1:41:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 22080    haadam i meant keep it to yourself unless at home or in church now knowledge may be power but when people are like "your a sinner cause you dont yatta yatta yatta" it gets old and monotanous
Date: 7/23/2002 3:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 54987    In a way... I think prosletyzing to people unasked for should be against the law. It comes under the same thing as 'hawking' and 'soliciting'. I would like one's religion to be a personal thing. However, if someone goes to the church and asks to be 'shown the light', then it is perfectly all right to show them it. (That's if the fuse hasn't gone LOL)... Coolade
Date: 7/23/2002 9:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 27678    Sorry, but it's hard to "keep your religion to yourself," when it dictates your morals and therefore your behavior in life. I find it hard to understand how I am supposed to be a Christian at home and church, but not when I vote or am in public. I am a Christian due to my belief in the morals and teachings of God and Jesus, and I can't just set it aside, cause someone else doesn't like my morals. Nothing personal, cause I don't know your belief system, but what I find hard to understand also, is that atheists continue to act as if they do not have a "religious belief," and therefore, they don't have to keep their "beliefs" to themselves, but can taint our whole society with their immorality and anti God behaviors, yet ask us to be silent. Seems kinda hypocritical, but that's just me.
Date: 7/23/2002 9:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 27678    Hey Jestr, didn't know it was your post. So, it goes DOUBLE FOR YOU, dude. LOL! Just kiddin'!
Date: 7/23/2002 10:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 22080    im just saying dont warch around with stickers saying that "real men believe in jesus" and crap like that and also being christian doesnt mean you have morals or not everyone has morals its just my idea of what is moral is different from others now i dont run around yelling at people about anti god stuff unless they get in my face with quotes from the bible or something lol
Date: 7/23/2002 11:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 44404    oh yeah, um a correction for you dude, if you were interested. that george carlin, "playing with your head" stand up performance was from 1978. just in case.
Date: 7/24/2002 12:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 50435    I think what he means, Free Girl, is the more 'spiritual' aspect of religion. Basic morals can be traced to pretty much any religion as you can see just by looking around you. It's the 'preaching' part that I believe our friend Jestr is speaking of...
Date: 7/24/2002 10:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 54987    Freegirl I'm shocked at what you said. I take exception to your statement that atheists are 'tainting society with their immorality. I can't believe you really think that. Gee!
Date: 7/24/2002 11:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 24924    Coolade, I'm not shocked at all; at Free Girl's ignorant statement. It is very typical of what I have seen coming from her for over a year now. SHE really....REALLY should never use the word: HYPOCRITE, since obviously she has no clue as to what it means. She is under the DELUSION that one can ONLY have morals IF they are a christian. MOST christians have that old ignorant belief drummed in to their heads from day one, and refuse to learn and or accept anything to the contrary. Oh, and the: "tainting society" rot; THAT has nothing to do with atheists; since I see an awful lot of tainting going on by people who use Christianity as a FRONT. Does GW Bush mean anything to you Free Girl? John Ashcroft? Tell me about THEIR "morality". Furthermore, tell me about YOUR so-called "morality" Free Girl. You continually, piously exibit such bigotry; such dishonesty and propaganda, and you have the gall to say it is the atheists that are "tainting"!?? Explain just how it is, that you believe that ALL people who don't believe as YOU do, are immoral? YOU, with your EXCLUSIVIST "Us versus Them" mindset, you thing and act as though nobody, no books, no other religions, no groups of people, no other entity of any kind, NO ONE else has access to the TRUTH but you! YOU seem to have your own little exclusive definitions for words; honesty, morality, integrity, hypocrisy, etc. etc. Well, sister, you know what you can do with YOUR brand of "truths" "morality" and "honesty"........put it where the sun don't shine.
Date: 7/24/2002 12:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    If you don't like other people's opposing opinions or beliefs, then ignore them..I ignore those who do not want to hear what I have to say,but that doesn't stop me from saying what I have to say whenever or wherever I chose..I have that right to discuss ANY SUBJECT ANY WHERE and ANY PLACE JUST AS ANYONE ELSE DOES..You or no one else has the right to tell me where and when I can discuss my opinions or beliefs on any subject whatsoever..If you don't like what I have to say regarding anything I believe, then ignore me,but don't attempt to silence me..In the past, women were looked down on and men attempted to silence them..DIDN'T WORK DID IT!! Now..I am woman AND I firmly believe God is..I will not push my belief on you or anyone else,BUT..I will not confine what I believe to my home or church building..I do not ask that you keep what you believe nor your opinions to yourself..If I would attempt to do so,I would be stepping on your rights as a human being..To sum it up: Your way is not the solution PS..I have had people attempt to push an ouija board at me..I do not believe the ouija board is anything but a silly game board which is run off on the same machines that childrens games are run on. The evil stems from peoples imagination..If I had my way,I would stop every post here on USM regarding ouija boards,witchcraft,etc..BUT..Do I attempt to force the issue simply because I don't like it??? NO....People has their rights and I have mine..I simply ignore what I do not like nor believe in..I suggest you do the same when it comes to God and/or what others believe..
Date: 7/24/2002 9:16:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 22080    rusure read my post about the baptist church in my town and THEN youll understand what i mean
Date: 8/10/2002 7:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 52256    I don't like the idea of commandments in general. We all have our morals, and that should be enough. I never did go for any religion that has rules. Religion should be about celebrating your God or Goddess or who ever. It shouldn't be about working your whole life to get into their good graces.
