The Best I Can! ~ Hey Larry~

When I was young, and lived under your roof,
I abided by the rules, though you questioned me.
The constant threat kept me in fear.
Knowing that you would check up on me.

I am not blind, as I know the score,
You even went through my dresser drawers.
All the while I tried to appease you,
Though I never seemed to please you.

My older brother is thrown in my face,
Without a chance given, to state my case.
I did no wrong at that time,
Though you've accused me of a crime.

Time has passed, from since what was then.
And I am all grown up, I am a man.
Why is it you still treat me so?
When is the last time your arms did hold?

The genuine grace and sincerity true.
Why must you always think that I am aloof?
I shudder to think, what you think of me now.
Is there any way of convincing you somehow?

Your last phone call did me in.
As you pried into what was no sin.
But yet you persisted, to question me so.
Why can't you just let it go?

I am no longer under your roof.
I have also told you I can't be spooked.
I am all grown up, and I shed a tear.
That you still try to instill your fear.

Why can't you see me for what I am?
I am an adult, the best I can.
I work everyday, and pay my taxes.
Not down on my luck, I grind no axes.

I am doing my best, for I am only human.
I make mistakes, which is within reason.
But doing my best, never suits you.
It's no wonder I can't talk to you.

You refuse to listen, your mind is set.
Blind to the obvious, I'm willing to bet.
That I can be a person who's proud.
Of where I have been, sing it loud.

Though I may not meet your expectations,
The way you are acting damages relations.
I am doing my best, try as I may,
But you no longer have the last say.

I am imperfect, this much is true.
But I refuse to let you make me blue.
I just wish you would accept me for who I am,
For we both know, I do the best I can.
