Let's play a little game --- Am I black or white????

  Author:  30743  Category:(Discussion) Created:(7/17/2002 10:22:00 AM)
This post has been Viewed (1565 times)

I was once teased and tormented by another race of people.

I hear racist remarks thrown in my direction all the time.

I am told that if I wear a certain kind of clothing, I am imitating this other race.

I am told that if I talk in a certain way or listen to a certain music, I am trying to be this race.

Now without looking at my ID name, and figuring this out, do you know what color I am?

Racism is everywhere, folks. It's not just one race that is racist, and I would also like to point out that the flag I fly is a part of my heritage. I was born and raised in the South, I am Southern to my toes, my talk is Southern, my walk is Southern. I believe in Jesus and giving respect to Mamma. I eat vegetables that are plucked from the garden out back.

I also drive a car, and wash my clothes and hair. I love my family and go to work every day. I go to school and manage finances. I do all of the things a human being does in today's world.

So what color am I? White or Black? Born and raised in the South, I fly a Confederate Flag because I'm proud to be Southern (the Confederate Flag to me is pride in my Southern roots, ever heard the song lyrics, country by the grace of God?) That's all the Confederate Flag is to me, because I am Southern and proud of being Country to my toes. Then some high falootin' people want to make a big to do over me flying my flag. Some are of one race, the others are of my race.

I also own Malcolm X t-shirts and respect Black history month. Why can't I do this in peace without someone causing a big hoopla over it just cause it's geared to one race?

On the school board, there are black folks and white folks. On the police force there are black folks and white folks. Why does prejudice come into the picture? Why look at a flag and say I'm prejudice of my own race or another race? Because my flag is pride in my Southern heritage... Why look at the shirt I wear and say I'm prejudice?

The truth is, can you figure out whether I'm black or white? There is prejudice on both sides, but it don't have nothing to do with cloth, whether it be worn or flown. It has to do with a few select people who view the world as against them because of their color. And if we all woke up and realized it, we'd know that there are people like that on both sides.

Without looking at my ID number or name, what color am I?

Date: 7/17/2002 10:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 56837    That was very powerful- I see what your getting at. It just doesn't matter what color you are. The point is, we each do things differently, and just because we look different on the outside, doesnt mean we have different feelings. We're all human, and that's that. Great post.
Date: 7/17/2002 10:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 49025    I think that it doesn't matter if you are black or white. What matters is the kind of person you are and that you respect other people.
Date: 7/17/2002 10:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 28190    Actually sweety, it doesnt matter if you are black or white, or other race or nationality you are.. here we arent judged and dont judge upon skin color I am also southern.. Born and raised on Alabama soil.. I have a confederate flag over my window in my bedroom that has the words "heritage not hate" on it, just to put the flag in the right perspective. I think racism is so ridiculous, we all bleed red, We all think, we all love, we all have hearts and Feelings. We should all be held equal, but there are always going to be a certain group that tries to point to race as a problem, which I will never in a million years be able to understand. Just be you and continue to be the proud productive citizen that you are and dont let anyone get to you. *huge huggles* Love, Amanda
Date: 7/17/2002 10:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    (pssst this person is really GREEN! I know!)
Date: 7/17/2002 10:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 25438    White...no black person would fly that flag of ignorance and intollerance!!!
Date: 7/17/2002 10:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    It's not ignorance or intolerance Blue Knight and my friend is black and southern and holds it high with pride... so I disagree!
Date: 7/17/2002 10:41:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30743    Hi Blue Knight... Why is it ignorance and intolerance? All I can say is that it's a freaking peice of cloth, what is prejudice about that? It's not to me, but it to black people? Ha! Then that's in their own minds, not mine. Because my flag is my pride in the South, doesn't have anything to do with Black race. If I was racist, I would wear a white hood, not fly a flag.
Date: 7/17/2002 10:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 55376    You are white as newly fallen snow. You have the right to fly any flag you wish it is a free country. Og
Date: 7/17/2002 10:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 25438    True..but as I said to black people that flag stands for ignorance and intollerance. Its stands for the side of that war that supported keeping there ancestors as pets. Everyone is intitled to their opinion..and I respect yours...but to me..and about 100% of the african american population..its a sign of hatred, it doesn't matter what you have it up for.
Date: 7/17/2002 10:46:00 AM  From Authorid: 25438    Kethria...this is an on line medium for people so there is really no way to prove that...honestly if he does he is 1 in a million. I don't think there are ANY African Americans that look at that flag and think positivly...
Date: 7/17/2002 10:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 25438    So what is it MNKY that you are proud of about the south that fought under that flag...that is not so true about the american flag??? What does that stand for that Americas stars and strips doesn't represent!
Date: 7/17/2002 10:48:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30743    Well Blue Knight, I could consider Malcolm X t-shirts and hats black power and glorifying them while disrespecting the white race, but I do not consider a piece of cloth racist. I consider racist someone coming up to me and calling me a white cracker. That is racism, NOT a piece of cloth.
Date: 7/17/2002 10:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 58445    Purple?
Date: 7/17/2002 10:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 28190    True the flag was made for the confederates in the Civil war, And they were fighting over Land and freeing slaves. But I dont see how that is a personal attack to Anyone these days.. I can somewhat understand that point to someone that was a slave or one of there close family members were a slave.. but the flag was more then just for slaves it was for the southern pride, and if you dont live in the south, you wont understand it completely. I am not racist, and I have many black friends HERE in Alabama that fly confederate flags, for heritage not hate.. *huge huggles* Love, Amanda
Date: 7/17/2002 10:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    it's a she
Date: 7/17/2002 10:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 25438    First I didn't mention racism..you brought that up first. Second Malcom X was a great leader for the black community at that time. Flying the confederate flag would be more like wearing a black panther tee shirt because you have ancestors that were in it...malcom X was not about hating..the confederate side was..there is a VERY distinct difference.
Date: 7/17/2002 10:54:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30743    Blue Knight, what I consider happened back then was that BOTH Sides were defending their right to live as they did, both sides defended themselves, be killed or kill, that is war. War over what? Who cares, it was so long ago, why not LEARN from the past, and stop saying that a flag is a symbol of hatred? Because the Confederate flag is NOT a sign of hatred nowadays, it is a sign of being proud of being BORN IN THE FREAKING COUNTRY. Country, Blue Knight, the United States flag also flies in my yard. My grandpa fought in the Marines and the Navy, my dad fought for this country in the Navy. We are not a prejudice people concerning the American flag, but I will NEVER bow my head to a piece of cloth, and worship what it stands for. I bow my head to God and Jesus, and worship them, for a flag is cloth and represents ANYTHING anyone wishes it to represent. For other countries, the American flag is a hated symbol of opressors to them. So a flag can and will stand for whatever people's feeble little brains can dream up.
Date: 7/17/2002 10:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 28190    The confederate flag is just like the original "American" flag.... It has 13 stars on it to constitute the 13 original Colonies.. Im not much of a civil war buff, but I do know enough to know that the flag wasnt made just because the South was trying to stay slave owners.. heck back then, there were slaves that were freed that decided to stay on the land of their masters because in about 50% of the plantations the slave owners were good to the slaves... but you dont see that in history books you only see the negative things in everything. I think, the flag shows my Pride at being a Southerner... For living in the south, and withstanding many false ideas about Southern "hicks"... its a southern thing, just like if you live in a certain state and you decided to fly that state flag, would you be doing it because you felt you had to show someone your better???? Heck no, you wouldn't... So why would we? *huge huggles* Love, Amanda
Date: 7/17/2002 11:02:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30743    Blue Knight, all I have to say about what you said about Malcolm X... BULL CORN.
Date: 7/17/2002 11:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 25438    THANK YOU MNKY!!! You proved my point nicely. I argued this to death yesterday...but I never really asked someone WHY NOT JUST FLY THE AMERICAN FLAG?? There is no reason in your reply!!! The only thing you say is that both sides were fighting to live as they wanted to live...the south using people as slaves, beating them, raping them...the north not..and you fly the southern flag..it may stand for southern pride but that flag stands for EVERYTHING the South stood for. You can't pick and choose what it stands for..it is what it is!!
Date: 7/17/2002 11:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 25438    From what I know of Malcom X...he didn't preach hatred against the innocent white man. Mabey the prejudice white man...Am I wrong in that??
Date: 7/17/2002 11:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 28190    Blue Knight, Back in the Civil war there were also, Northerners that did the same thing, it just wasnt publicized because the North had all the financial resources due to being tied into the French at that time. But you see "US" southerners get ragged on about everything, including being racist, and there isnt a racist bone in my body and there never will be, And just because you want to sit there all high and mighty because you think you are right here, let me tell you, You are wrong.. You are trying to say that because we fly a piece of cloth we are supporting Racism, and I WILL never stand for that, because that is a Personal insult to me. In my eyes, Black, white, Indian, asian, mexican, etc Are ALL equal.. I just wish People that always call people on things would take the Oppurtunity to get to know those before they say something that could be taken offensively.. Now, I am done here, because all you are doing is helping spread hate and I will be NO part of it
Date: 7/17/2002 11:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    Malcom X a great leader?? Do you know what the nation of Islam teaches about white people?? That we (meaning white people) were created in a lab by an evil scientist...How..uhm...how enlightening..If you don't believe me you can look it up..
Date: 7/17/2002 11:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 55376    The fact is while slavery was the major issue it was not the only one. Many decent respectable people, Robert E. Lee is an example, fought for the South. They were right on the issue of states rights, though the allowance of slavery was a terrible flaw in the Constitution. Any freedom loving American who cares about free speech should support anyones right to fly the Confederate flag. My personal experience is many, but certainly not all, flyers of the Confederate flag are racists. Og
Date: 7/17/2002 11:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 55319    You are true to yourself...- Free Destiny
Date: 7/17/2002 11:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 55376    Yes, the Black Muslims are a racist religion. It preaches the evil white man was created 6000 years ago. To give some defense to Malcolm X he seemed to be seperating himself from certain Black Muslim teachings at the time of his death. In fact, many argue it was this attempt at seperation that caused his death. Og
Date: 7/17/2002 11:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    Also MoneyLuvr, my husband is in the military, we have friends of all races, both of our very close friends are black couples, my daugher has always had black friends...until Jr. high that is, when it evidently became "uncool" for blacks to hang with whites, Kayla talks about how prejudice the blacks are at her school, how the white kids are put down..You know, white parents can only do so much, until black parents want to let go of the past and teach there OWN children not to be racist, we will never move forward in this society..
Date: 7/17/2002 11:31:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30743    As long as this is a free country, I CAN PICK AND CHOOSE how I choose to view a flag...
Date: 7/17/2002 12:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 2030    I think the rebel flag looks fine on the hood of a 69 Dodge Charger.
Date: 7/17/2002 12:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 30621    Hey Monkeyluvr, Guess what color I am? Guess what corlor my children are. I own The Flag you people are talking about. I do not see it stands for anything unless you want it to. I just think it's a piece of cloth that I like. I'm far from racist against any race. I see good and bad in all people. Things only stand for something if you want it to. I stay the heck away from these race debates and post's unless like today and yesteray I just cant take any more. I have been on USM for over a year. No one asked me my race when I came on here and I never asked them. But I have read and backed away from heated debates about racism and "your race is against mine" or "Our people deserve money because of what your people did to Them". It's silly to me. I'm sorry but it is. I have decided my children and I are a race of of our own. I have not thought up a name for it yet but when I do I'll let everyone know. I could not take side if I wanted to. If I did I would be disrespecting one of my children, grandpas or grandmas. No nationality was put on my birth certificate. That is the truth. I am a person without a race. So guess what color my skin is? It was very dark when I was born, but now it;s very light. I was born with brownish red hair but I choose to be a blond. My eyes are brownish green. But I like my blue contacts. I speak English and when I'm tipsy I speak and understand Spanish. Sorry this is so long. God Bless and Good debate. You made a good point. BTW, Nice to see you Monkeyluvr my dear USM friend!
Date: 7/17/2002 1:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 55376    So if a cloth T-shirt used a racial slur followed by the word stink it would not be racist? Og
Date: 8/15/2002 10:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 54247    You are God's color! Seems like everytime I dislike or mistrust someone because of their attitudes or style of clothing, etc., I have been very, very wrong. At work, I learned to be extra nice to people I really didn't like - always ended up loving them. There are reasons for the seasons.
