AFP - US and British warplanes patrolling the sky over southern Iraq struck Iraqi air defence installations today in response to anti-aircraft fire, the US Central Command said.
The coalition planes fired precision-guided weapons at unspecified air defence sites at approximately 3.50am (1750 AEST), the statement said.
The statement said the counterattack was launched because the Iraqi facilities "helped direct air defences attacks today against coalition aircraft".
"Coalition strikes in the no-fly zones are executed as a self-defence measure in response to hostile Iraqi acts against coalition forces."
It was the first coalition strike against targets in southern Iraq since June 28, when Iraqi anti-aircraft opened fire on US and British planes patrolling the no-fly zone.
The statement made no mention of casualties or damage except to say coalition warplanes "go to painstaking lengths to avoid injury to civilians or damage to civilian facilities" during their operations.
