There once was a child went forth every day, And the first thing he came upon that object he became, And that object became a part of that child...forever.
The words of this world became a part of this child, Compliment, censorship, diatribes wild. Silver screen monologues from old movie script, Were stuck in his mind til he lay in the crypt. The State of the Union, and business taglines, The phone calls, the TVs, the "going online." Lyrics of songs and poetry crazed, Left this child thoughtful and pleasantly dazed.
Tyrranical spice, and sweat made of salt, Flavorless water, and a large chocolate malt. Succulent strawberriesm cough syrup each hour, Liver and onions, milk that went sour. His tounge lapped up up savory tomato soup slow, A bittersweet wine from decades ago. Celery, Lemonheads, French fries and stuff, Tasted so good he could not get enough.
The scents of the sea played around this boy's nose, And the cinnamon Christmases, spring's first red rose, The smell of the brown burning leaves in the fall, The wind through the graveyard with no scent at all. Middle school lo cker rooms, chemistry lab, Spilt Russian vodka on his local-bar's tab. Cigarette smoke, hairspray from his wife, Remained in his nostrils his entire life.
The things that he saw, the good and the worse, Limos and sedans and father's black hearse. Women and children, green plants and blue birds, Police stations, libraries with books full of words. The colors of his flag wove red, blue and white, The way the world dimmed when she left him that night. The trees that gave comfort, gave him shade from the sun, And the therapist who helped this "life" job get done.
The end advanced quickly, he now had it made, out to what he'd do when he wasn't afraid. Suspicion arose of time wasted these years, Sadness in tired eyes clouded with tears. The joys that he heard, that he smelt, that he saw, They made his emotions, how he hated them all. Questions of lonliness, drenched by age and the rain, A bullet - an answer - set sail through his brain.
DISCLAIMER!!!: This poem was an assignment in English class, to do a take on Walt Whitman's "There Was A Child Went Forth" poem. The 3 lines at the beginning was a part of the assignment and to omit it would leave the rest a bit awkward. I have, however, altered Mr. Whitman's opening stanza. Just so there is no copyright infringement going on, I AM CREDITING my source. Thank you for reading.
