I've had DirecTV for a while, and yes, usually when there is a severe thunderstorm it can interupt with the satellite signal and the picture and sound will get choppy, and sometimes you might just temporarily lose the signal, but it usually fixes itself when the storm passes, and along with that you get lots of 3 digit channels depending on what package you got... =) |

the only thing i don't like about having dircet tv is that i can't get local news unless i unhook the satellite and hook-up the antenae. but other than that i like it. the weather thing isn't a big deal at all. luv - |

well finally a conversation that I am an expert about!!! I work for Echostar, parent company of DISH Network...here are your answers...the only way you will lose your signal during a strom is if the dish is not installed correctly or does not have a good line of site. When your dish is installed it will tell you what your initial signal strength is. If it is over 80% then chances are you will make it through a storm. If it falls below this number then you are going to have many stormy nights without your TV. You want to have the installer target a 90 to 100% siganl strength. If this is achievable you will only lose signal during the solar block...this occurs about once a year for a few minutes. Echostar is in the process of buying/merging with DirecTV, if not I would have suggested that you get DISh...we have better programming, unless you got Direct for the NFL ticket, which DISH will have even if the merger doesn't go through...probably this year. For more info on satellites you can visit our home site at www.dishnetwork.com---DirecTV and dish both use similar technology so this should help answer your questions! Good Luck! |

your locals will run you $5.99 per month and it still ends up being less than cable. If you need other prices, let me know. |

yea i did the math and it is way cheaper than cable because you get more channels and it's still thirty somethin when we pay fifty somethin..so yea..i'm just worried about the weather thin but i think i can live through it..oh i have another question..my mom said we can't use the VCR to record shows off of TV that's on Direct TV and that we have to buy somethin..is that true or can we use the VCR to record shows? |

you can't use VCR plus but you can have them set it up with RCA jacks to record however, it would be much better to get the new Tivo model or a PVR because that way you don't need VCR tapes...it records on a hard drive. It also allows you to skip through commercials. |

so no matter what you can't use a VCR? yea i guess i think i should talk to my parents and tell them to get a Tivo...what's a PVR? |

I dont get local channels cause they dont supply them for this area so thats a con..and if there is a storm or it gets too sunny or snowy outside you will loose the signal and you will have to wait till it clears up..it usually dont take long though..lol and that doesnt happen a lot..the channels are 3 digit numbers 8D good luck with your satellite dish!! lol |

no, you can use a VCR but it has to be hooked up into the receiver and a PVR is a personal video recorder, like Tivo, but more advanced. |

I live in Texas where the bad thunderstorms roam...lol...and we have DirectTV and everytime we have a bad storm it messes up our DirectTv. Also, if you ever have to mess with the wiring or wire it yourself it is rather difficult and time consuming. Other than those it is pretty good. Also, I would recommend getting the Starz movie package for $12/ month. It is totally worth it! Yes, there are a lot of 3 digit numbers but it's fun! Have fun! |

I saw that about the VCR up there, we use a VCR and it works just fine. You can use a VCR to record DirectTV, I do it all the time. Also, if you have any plain old "air" tv's in your house I would just watch the local news on those rather than pay extra for your local news channels. Good luck! |

I've got directv and yes it can go out if you have a thunderstorm..everytime we have one it goes out and a blue strip will come up at the bottom and will say 'searching for satellite signal' (it bugs the crab outta me) and yea it does have 3 digit numbers for channels. We also get PPV movies and events..where you can order a movie with your remote..I do that alot. |

Satellites have a very hard time coming in when there is a bad storm out. Ours (I think we have Dish) cuts out and blips and goes out in storms, especially electrical ones. If you want to prevent that the best bet is cable, although when we had cable the line was down more than our current dish goes out... |
