Planned Parenthood has helped me out before, I needed a doctor's checkup and they were willing to take me in same day and I only had to pay what I could afford. It's a wonderful organization. |

Many pro-lifers beat on the fact that you can obtain a safe LEGAL abortion at a planned parenthood clinic and that makes them evil and is a reason that they should be wiped out. What many of them seem to overlook is the fact that planned parenthood also provides medical check-ups, birth control, std and aids testing along with prenatal care. They also seem to forget the fact that you can obtain an abortion at just about any OBGYN/Gynocological office in the United States and that abortions are not just soley preformed by planned parenthood. They don't seem to understand that planned parenthood offers low cost medical attention that can be afforded by ALL income levels so that those in a lower income ratio can still obtain decent medical care regardless of what they are able to afford. They also don't realize that many of those that do have private insurance STILL use planned parenthood as their preferred choice of care in that medical area, despite the fact that they could go elsewhere. It called seeing what you want to see and turning a blind eye to those things that you should also be seeing... |

Interesting that a "pro-life" group will defend the rights of a dividing cell structure and on the other hand encourage their followers to kill a fully formed human being. |

Extremist pro-life groups who advocate anyone's death are repugnant to those with moral sensitivity. My problem with Planned Parenthood stems from their apparent position on teenage pregnancy. Officially, the organization recognizes teenage pregnancy as a problem, yet it does not strongly support abstinence, the only guaranteed solution. Instead, it promotes less efficient solutions and assumes that teens will have sex irresponsibly. I don't think that Federal dollars should be dispensed to organizations that are not truly interested in solving the problems they claim to be concerned about. |

Alfrowt, it's not that they don't support abstinence, it's that they have a foothold onto the mountain called reality, the same mountain that these extremist pro-lifers can't seem to even locate on a map. Extremist pro-lifers are no different than the Taliban or radical PLO members. They believe in violence as a means to an end. When you start hunting people down it could be taken as a sign that you've gone to far. Take care and we can talk about this 'til we're all blue in the face...Gallytuck. P.S. Has that ever happened? Does anyone actually know someone who talked so much that they went blue in the face? LOL |

Thanks for your reply, Gallytuck. I agree with your assessment of extremist pro-lifers. Support of abstinence is not a far-fetched idea, unless one believes that people cannot control themselves and should not be held accountable for their actions. I don't remember seeing any evidence that Planned Parenthood gives anything but lip service to the practice of abstinence; their funds and energy are devoted to more financially profitable ends. |

They STONGLY support abstinence. But they do know that no matter how strongly they encourage it the teenager is going to do what they want. So, instead of pretending that all their patients actually listen to them, they make sure that the teenager is protected if they decide to have sex. TarheelGirl |

Thanks for your response, TarheelGirl. I checked Planned Parenthood's website (http://www.ippf.org/) and did not find strong support for abstinence. Instead, I found vague references to "other" methods of addressing the problem of teenage pregnancy. IMO, their position clearly favors contraceptives and abortions. If I have missed something, please let me know. |
