Should ferrets be legal as pets?

Do you think it is right for ferrets to be illegal in some places? You can correct me if I'm wrong, but last I heard they were illegal in New York City, Washington, D.C., Minneapolis, the entire state of California, Hawaii, a few large Texas cities, and a few other places. They say that the ferrets will get loose, form colonies and destroy native wildlife. Also they say they are very dangerous and will kill babies. But that doesn't happen where they are legal, so I don't see why they should be banned in these places. However, I don't think the police are out searching for ferrets as their #1 priority, but still, I wouldn't want to risk the life of my ferret. Well, anyway, I just wanted to know your thoughts on this. Why or why they shouldn't be banned. ~lilac siamese~

Date: 6/18/2002 8:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 12428    Well, I really don't know much about ferrets are their lifestyles so I really can't say if they should or should not be banned. Sorry I couldn't shed any light on the subject.
Date: 6/18/2002 8:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    Ferrets are okay little beasts. My daughter and her fiance have one and they are okay as pets. More high energy in my opinion and I prefer dogs and cats.
Date: 6/18/2002 8:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 38192    MY parents had a pair of them. Jasper and Juno! lol They got rid of them because of m being born. Cause if they smell milk on the babys mouth, they wil get into there mouth for the milk, which can suffocate the baby
Date: 6/18/2002 8:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 19875    Ferrets are awsome, I love the little guys. They're legal in Canada (yay)
Date: 6/18/2002 8:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 9130    I don't think they should be illegal-- the time I have spent with ferrets they seemed fine-- They weren't mean at all...
Date: 6/18/2002 8:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 49543    i see no problem ferrets. actually, i love the lil things. i've never heard anyone voice the concern about them getting out and destroying the habitat. but if it truely is a problem, then the focus should be on the irresponsible owners who either let them go or do not keep them securely in their home; it's the owner's responsibility. and i just can't believe that they are capable of killing babies. so, to answer your question, no, i don't think they should be banned. luv-
Date: 6/18/2002 9:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 46982    It isnt right for ferrets to be illegal! 1: they cant survive in the wild to "make colonies" 2: they kill mice and small animals, and probablly not babies. If ur woried bout that, keep ur ferrets away from the baby. I love my ferrets, and the only thing they try to hurt is my bird, but thats instinct. FERRETS ARE COOL! lol im done
Date: 6/18/2002 9:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 42519    In My state, Utah, they are legal everywhere but Utah County. Dont ask me why, but all the other counties can have ferrets, but not Utah county. We have a lot of people from California come and buy ferrets at my work. They sell ferret supplies at the pet stores in Cali, but just not the ferrets. Ive heard the stories of them killing children, but it was mostly handler error. I've never heard the "milk in the babies mouth" story, but I guess anything is possible. The stories I've heard is that a ferret will crawl in the crib, the child will move, and the ferret thinks its playing and will knaw off digits, thus the end of the childs life... Anything like that ever being proven to me has still not happened. I like ferrets. I see all of them, and yes, a ferret can be the meanest little animal you have ever seen, but at the opposite end of the spectrum, they can be the biggest marshmallows that wouldn't hurt a soul. The thing Ive heard is that the authorities dont like ferrets because owners who dont want them anymore let them loose in the wild and they breed and run amuck. All the ferrets we get at my work have alredy been spayed or neutered and have been decented. They are wonderful animals if raised right. Just like dogs and cats. Dogs can kill, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the dog is mean. I like them, they should be legal, but under the right owners/circimstances... Love ya tonz
Date: 6/18/2002 11:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 53311    There legal here. I had two of them when I was younger, they stink but their cute. They like to ride on your shoulder when you walk around the house. So I like em. SDA
Date: 6/19/2002 8:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 48809    My son used to have one ( Illinois) that he thought a great deal of. It was very frisky, but not at all mean! Posey
Date: 6/19/2002 9:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 54987    Yeah as long as you don't put them up your trousers! In England putting ferrets in your trousers is a sport. The longer you keep them up there the better. I don't need to tell you what the dangers are. 8¬D
Date: 6/19/2002 9:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 51191    No! if you take care of your ferret right and give them plenty of space in their cage, keep it clean, and make sure the ferrets are happy then thats NOT going to happen and if people don't protect their baby from their ferret and their ferret from their baby or take care of their ferret then the pet should be taken away its like that with the baby too so why not with the ferret so isay they be legal as long as they are taken care of there will be no problems/
Date: 6/19/2002 12:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 10722    That sounds ridiculous, any pet can be dangerous, regardless of what it is. It all depends on the owner.
