denying children food-- justified?

Get this. My 7 year old son came home from school yesterday and told me he only had a peanut butter sandwich and milk for lunch. I ask we he didn't buy the regular meal. He told me he tried but they took it away from him because he only had 50 cents in his account. (The lunches are paid for by a debit system. I write a check and he uses a PIN number to access the account.) Notices are sent out when the acount runs low. I recieved no notice and had no clue how much was left in there. Last year, I was not refunded any money and have a hard time believing he broke exactly even. Regular lunch is $1.50. They denied my child a balanced meal because of a dollar! He has 3 more days of school. I would have gladly sent in the stinkin' dollar today! I have contacted the cafeteria lady. She got snippy with me and told me to take it up with her supervisor. I called the supervisor and she's on vacation until the end of August. So I called and left a message for the principal to call me back... 3 hours ago! Can you believe this? What about the children who may only have a balanced meal at school? What if my child is hypoglycemic like me? This is outrageous! I have every intention of calling my friend who works for the local paper. I will write a letter naming names and have that published!

Date: 6/12/2002 10:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 18527    That's awful... they HAVE FREE lunch for godsakes!
Date: 6/12/2002 10:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 24003    That is rediculous!!! Im glad you plan to do something about it. I wouldnt tolerate that crap either. Love,
Date: 6/12/2002 10:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 46530    Why they didnt do what they do at ours I dont know, give the child the food, then send the parents the bill
Date: 6/12/2002 10:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 54175    Wow!! Things like this happen and it seems like the school has a personal grudge with your child. Go and call your friend! TimI
Date: 6/12/2002 10:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 49037    That's horrible! At my old school, they have started the same debit system. When I was at home, I was reading the flyer about it my brother brought home. I remember it said that if the child didn't have enough money, they would be given lunch anyway, and the parents would be given a notice, like a bill to pay later. That way the child still gets lunch. If you get no response from anyone at the school, definitley do the newspaper thing. That will get some attention.
Date: 6/12/2002 10:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 46515    Even my husband read this post with me and said that is B.S.!!!! They could have given your child a lunch. Thats outrageous.
Date: 6/12/2002 10:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 11341    OMG I am speachless! How could they do this to a child?!?!?! Id be unpacking the tent, bacause they wouldnt be getting rid of me until I had some answers and an appology to my son. Post the story when its publish would you please?
Date: 6/12/2002 11:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    They do that here at our schools too. Sad isn't it? The things that some adults do to our children in schools would make your hair stand on end. Just now my children are beginning to tell me about things that went on in their schools and my kids are grown now. I now understand why they were grouchy when they came home.
Date: 6/12/2002 11:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 49025    That's horrible. I'm glad you are taking action. There are only 3 days of school left and they couldn't just send a note home with him saying you owe me a dollar? How pathetic.
Date: 6/12/2002 11:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 36950    my daughters school has the same setup, parents pay X amount and kids use a pin number. Lnches are only $1 yet one month, $20 doesn't buy you 20 lunches. The next month $20 buys you 22 lunches. We have a policy that no child goes unfeed and everyone gets the same lunch. They even make the kids who are allergic to milk take it anyway, those kids then get a cup of water to go with the lunch. I say write the paper.
Date: 6/12/2002 12:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    yes this is awful!! the school my grandson went to, took his lunch and wouldnt let him eat until he finished some assignments. WHEN I went one day early to pick him up as he had a dentist appointment, and this was after two in the after noon, his lunch was still sitting at the teachers desk. Needless to say the teacher or principal is NO LONGER working there at that school. Raise cain about it, as this is WRONG>
Date: 6/12/2002 12:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 17693    thats terrible! and i mean...they can at least compensate a poor hungry kid for ONE day until you know they can notify a parent. a kid shouldnt go hungry like that they really shouldnt. i mean whats one day? then they can go home and you know tell their parents and their parents can do something about it. i think these darn school boards are just getting a little too cheap.
Date: 6/12/2002 1:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 16069    Good for you! Im glad to see that you stick up for your kid like that. A lot of parents wouldnt. For God sakes, if any of the teachers knew, Im sure they wouldve even gave him some money for food. And I cant believe the cafeteria lady didnt just give it to him. Thats pretty low!
Date: 6/12/2002 1:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 16069    I mean, I know your kids not going to starve over it, but its the whole principle.
Date: 6/12/2002 1:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    But I will say atleast they DID give your son something rather than leaving him out in the cold....
Date: 6/12/2002 1:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    yipes that's awful, in grade school we had the SAME system....pin stuff they'd stamp your hand when you had ONE day's lunch left in your account and then the next day if you had nothing for the following day so parents could send money. ONE time they did not stamp me. what they did in THOSE cases if it wasn't 'chronic' they would just give you the full lunch and then you had an IOU to the cafeteria....
Date: 6/12/2002 5:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 39887    I know exactly how you felt about this. Believe it or not. the same thing happened to my child years ago when this sysyem was first introduced. I wanted to cry, it was embarrassing to my daughter. I went to the board of education and the school officials.I threatened to take the incident to the paper and tv, see my child had NO lunch and it was an error in the system because the money WAS there!! Raise cane, that should never happen to a child, ever!!! I am sorry and I hope this never happens again.
Date: 6/13/2002 9:12:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 14272    Thank you ALL for the supportive comments! So far I have emailed all of the school board members. I will keep you posted!
