Is This Legal...can companies do this???******Golden Taxi******

Some of us at work have some problems/concerns with things that upper management does.

I'm not stating the name of the company, but I would like to know if anyone here knows anything about the law, or protocol, for that matter. I know that laws concerning employees rights can vary from state to state.. In a nutshell, can a company make up rules as they go along?

Can a company threaten you with your job, if you don't do what they say, when, what they want you to do was not in the handbook, as something being stated as a job requirement?

Can they just keep pressuring people to do something, and cutting back hours, to run people off?

Have any of you ever gone through anything like this?

Thanks all.

Date: 5/31/2002 9:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    This is a really sketchy area mainly because the gov't. can't regulate self-owned corporations too heavily. What you might try is looking up the latest bill of Worker's rights, and calling the corporate office for this company to find out what they can and cannot do. You may just have to accept it. The company I work for does it all of the time, and there's not much anyone can do about it.

Date: 5/31/2002 9:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    I've gone through something similar but the company I worked for made sure they were "in legal right" even though it was unfair. Companies generally have to abide by the job description, hours and rate of pay that you signed a contract for. If they are going to vary these things they have to offer options or compensation, if unionized. If you are not unionized then you have only the rights given to you by your state's labor laws. Call the Labor Department and ask them about your concerns.
