LEO 1 (pope 440-61). Also called St.Leo The Great, he was said to practice sorcery and black magic. He waged a power struggle against his Bishops and attacked Manichaeism in Italy.

LEO 111 (pope 795-816) He was credited with writing a magical Grimore, the ENCHIRIDION, which he sent to Charlemagne, who protected him after Leo 111 was physically attacked by the family of one of his predecessor.

SYLVESTER ll (pope 999-1003) A learned man interested in science and the arts, Sylvester ll also was a reputed necromancer who won the papacy through spells. He reportedly had a demon mistress named Meridiana, who satisfied his cardnal lust and provided him wih material wealth. According to legand, Sylvester ll sold his soul to the Devil, who gave him a bronze head that gave oracular responses. The head predicted that Sylvester would not die, "except at Jerusalem". While giving Mass one day at a church in Rome , the Pope fell ill.Remembering the Oracle's prophecy, he asked for the name of the church and was told it was the Holy Cross of Jerusalem. The Pope knew the prophecy had come true, and he died.He was buried in Lateran, and his tomb reputedly sweats prior to the death of a prominent person. If a pope is going to die, the legand goes, the sweat is so heavy that it turns into a stream and creates a large puddle.

Gregory Vll (pope 1081-84) The Synod of Bressanone pronounced him a sorcerer on June 25, 1080, prior to his becoming pope. He was an austere reformer, much opposed by cardinals.

Honorius lll (pope 1216-27) Said to have written a new version of a magical GRIMORE, the Black Book.

Boniface Vlll (pope 1294-1303) Boniface Vlll found hs authority seriously challanged by the monarchies of Western Europe. He possesed a keen and superior intellect, which was tarnished by a short temper & an impulsive nature. Philip lV of France, one of his main opponents, whom he intended to excommunicate, used defamation, forgery and intimidation against him, including accusations of sorcery and heresy.Boniface was charged with making a pact with Demons and conjuring them regularly; keeping an IMP in a ring on his finger;infidelity; and while still a cardinal, sacrificing a rooster in a black-magic spell one night in a garden. Futhermore, it was said that when he died, he confessed his demonic pacts on his deathbed, and the moment of his death caused, according to one account,"so much thunder and tempest, with dragons flying in the air and vomiting flames, such lightning and other prodigies, that the people of Rome believed that the whole city was going to be swollowed up in the Abyss". Boniface was exonerated of all charges posthumously in 1312.

Benedict Xlll (pope 1394-1417) An Antipope, Benedict Xlll was believed to hold "continuous traffic with spirits...(keep) two demons.....in a little bag.....and(look) everywhere for books on Magic.

John XXlll(pope 1410-15) An antipope who supposedly enlisted the magical help of ABRAMELIN THE MAGE to save him from the Council of Constance, which deposed him.

Sixtus V (poep 1585-90) According to legand, pope Sixtus V sold his soul to the Devil in order to gain the papacy. Born Felice Peretti, he entered the Franciscan order and was sent to Spain in 1565 to investigate the alleged heresy of the Archbishop of Toledo. He stirred-up animosity in Spain, and when he was named the pope in 1585, the Spaniards accused him of entering a pact with Satan. The story goes that the Devil granted Sixtus a six-year reign. After five years, the pope fell gravely ill, and the Devil appeared at his bedside one night to collect his soul. The pope protested that he still had one year left on his contract. The Devil said he was reneging on one year, because Sixtus earlier had sentenced to death a young man who was one year too young according to law. The pope had no rebuttal, and died.

During his papacy, Sixtus spent huge sums of money on public-works projects, such as the completion of the Dome of St.Peter's. He also authorized Philip ll of Spain to send his Armanda against England. According to legand, the Witches of England raised a psychic force to cause storms at sea and help defeat Armada.

(Witches & Witchcraft-second edition, by Rosemary Ellen Guiley)

DEBATE: How far is the separation of organized religion from "Pagan" teachings? (All Protestant faiths resulted from the original church, historically founded by Constantine the Great, and combined the "new" Judeism with the local pagan traditions. The teachings of Jesus Christ were combined with the Pagan traditions.)

Am I wrong here?

Date: 5/25/2002 5:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 35042    With all the fun and games in the Catholic Church over recent years, I think a bit of sorcerery would be regarded as almost a blessing by the Catholic Establishment...!
Date: 5/25/2002 6:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    Christianity didn't stem from the Catholic religion..The Catholic religion stemmed from true Christianity.Also.. There are many myths and fables which cannot be taken at face value. These are stories with no actual proof that they are true. Many can be proven as nothing more than myths and fables within their own contents. Anyway..True Christianity taught against any form of witchcraft, therefore any one who went against this teaching also went against true Chistianity and as so many do even today, they borrow the name Christ gave to His sincere followers and the unlearned tends to believe it that anyone who teaches in the name of Christianity is teaching true doctrine, because they themselves do not study the teachings of true Christianity..
Date: 5/25/2002 6:42:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    Thank you, Rusue.....but King Solomon himself practiced many forms of magic, including divination. Aaron, of the old testament, was also a magician, as was Moses himself, probably learned while he was in the Egyptan court. If the first Christian's were in fact the Apostles, we can include more than a few who were in fact Gentile/Pagan's.....including Peter & Paul. Now Peter's teachings are the one upon whom the "Catholic" church was founded. Jesus Christ was a Jew. So, whom were the "christians", of whom you were speaking?
Date: 5/25/2002 9:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    No one said the roman catholic church didnt instigate and ADD in the combination of pagan with the gospel of Jesus, if you will read in the bible you will see that the roman impire was not liking that JEsus was getting the followers so of course they *pretended* to go along and add JesuS to their venue, to LOOk as if they were part of the PLan, funny but God warned us about the roman catholics at that time and also tells us that they shall also be part of the bringing in of the antichrist in the last days. NOW I have nothing against the catholic people that go to church, for they ONLY know what the roman catholic church and the vatican tell them.
Date: 5/25/2002 9:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    this is true, that the Catholic people only know what they are taught, but Cannon Law dictates, that the "Pope" is in fact, Jesus Christ on Earth, with all His power. When the Eucurist is Blessed, it is "transformed" into the literal flesh, of Christ. That is why there are pages & pages of rules about the care of the Eucurist. I am not mocking the Catholic Faith, I am merely pointing out the teachings of their own church.
Date: 5/25/2002 9:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    and surprise of all surprises, I agree with you.

Date: 5/25/2002 10:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    LOL, get up!! You have a post to run.
Date: 5/25/2002 10:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 17525    Hey LSG, I have a book called Ancient Christian Magic; an amazing collection of early magical texts from ancient Egypt that show the exotic rituals, esoteric healing practices, and incantatory and supernatural dimsensions that flowered in early Christianity. Most are of the Coptic Egyptian sect. It's no surprise that many of the early church were practitioners of this. It contains amulets, talismans, curses, recipes, rites and spells from translated Egyptian, and Greek texts. It even contains a spell written by Cyprian of Antioch to obtain a lover. Ultimately, i do believe that man, being the divine spiritual creature it is, does have the ability, though largely untapped, to enter into dialogue with the 'other dimensions'. I think that's primarily why religion has view it as taboo. If man were to realize his full creative and spiritual powers, religions would have no power over them at all. That wouldn't be good for the coffers. :-) BTW, the transubstantiation (consecration) of the catholic/christian cummunion ritual is a spell of sorts. JMO Peace,
Date: 5/25/2002 10:20:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    Really, Osiris??? I would love to read that one! *thanks for helping me up, FB*. I would love to read that book. Boy, I'll tell you, since I have been reading paleopagan history, I am stunned by what has been adopted, if not outright, stolen, from other belief systems....
Date: 5/25/2002 10:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    any time LSG, anytime. I hope your feeling better and are able to get outside a little bit.
Date: 5/25/2002 11:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 17525    LSG...WAKE UP! HERE.... you can go shopping for the book! LOL http://www.allbookstores.com/book/compare/0691004587
Date: 5/27/2002 10:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 27678    No, you're right - cause the Protestants kept the paganism from the Catholics, while claiming to go by the Bible, they aren't any better. The Bible forsakes sorcery, however, many practices in both the Catholic and Protestant churches contain pagan practices, and until people return to the WORD, exclusively, we can only go further down the slippery slope.
