~*Is One "Holy Writ" Of More Value Than Another "Holy Writ" & Who Decides?*~

For example, take the Koran. Now, I have never read the Koran. But my friend was explaining to me the similarities to the Torah & the Bible. Muslims consider the Koran, Alliah (God)'s Word, as given to man. Now, the Hebrews/Jews consider the Torah, God's Own word(s) to man, and therefore Holy Script. Pure & in it's entirety. Christians of course have the Bible (Torah, plus add'l Old & New Testament stories), and you have the Buddists, who thought the Words of Buddia are sacred, because he WAS God in a man's body. The Latter-Day Saints, consider the Book of Mormon, The Pearl of Great Price, and other doctuments sacred text, because they were given to men DEEMED to be modern prophets of the One True God.

Now, I think all these books are of the same value in the sense they teach 1) morals 2) and give a purpose to people AND 3) attempt to explain one's relationship with God.

I believe ALL these books should be in a school library from 6th grade, up. Plus books on Gods & Goddesses, Mythology, and Ancient Beliefs. They are all of similar worth in my opinion.

But the way, who decides what is "Holy Writ?" We know King James did. We know Joseph Smith, the Mormon Prophet was not only given prophecy, but was re-translating the Bible correctly.

Could they ALL be right?

What are your ideas?

As he correctly translated each passage, that passage would disappear (the passage in the unknown language, that is).Interesting to note, knowing that fun fact, that people of African-American decent according to LDS beliefs in the Book of Morman could not hold the priesthood, UNTIL the church was taken to court for discrimination, when suddenly, the prophet at the time had "a devine revelation from God", and African-Americans were now allowed to hold the priesthood, so it makes you kinda wonder what else did the Urmum and Thumum mistranslate??They are all similar in what they teach, but I think that they are all so poluted with man's ageandas to be "right" anymore. If the Bible is "God's Word", why are there more than ONE version of it, and who is man to second guess "God"? "Well I know what it says, but I'm sure God meant this..."
Date: 5/24/2002 11:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 48993    everyone is right and everyone is wrong .......... thats the simple truth here ... there is no "real" proof that any of these books about God or spirituality are correct ... the truth and the realness is within ones own heart and mind , i dont assume to be right about God , but i am right when it comes to how i belive , what i belive and why i believe .. and everyone can tell me i am wrong ...... but no one can know my true heart , or what my relationship with my God consits of so therefore , no one can say they are right or know the actual truth ....... they know what they believe to be true , and thats it!! and i think that any books containing things that comtribute ti self awarness , self help ans a spiritual understanding should be in school libraries for young people to check out , i dont belive however that any religion should be taught in schools.
Date: 5/25/2002 2:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 13974    the eternal debate.
Date: 5/25/2002 6:28:00 AM  From Authorid: 17525    Religions are like sides of a pyrimid. They all point to tha same source. They view it, however, from a completely different angle or perspective. Each has it's little piece of the puzzle and guards it viciously, claiming that their little piece is the entire puzzle. That's where religion and spirituality differ. One is a prescription of thought, the other is an embracing of manifest reality and truth devoid of dogma and doctrine. Religions cause wars. Spirituality sees the force behind the war as mans ego. Books are tools and are only good as tools. They do not complete the job in themselves any more than laying a hammer on an old roof and viewing the roof as being completed. Who decides? That question is best left to each individual heart. JMO
Date: 5/25/2002 9:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 53326    They cant all be right bc they contridict each other. Like you say that Buddhists think Buddha (I know his real name, but there is NO way I can spell it correcly LOL) was God incarnate right? Well, we believe that Jesus (we meaning Christians) is God's only son and is God incarnate So they cant all be the same. As Christians we believe that Jews are right until the point of Jesus. They are waiting on the Messiah to come, and we feel he already has. We do believe in the same God. Mormons arent monotheists, Christians are, so we cant be the same. They beleive that there are many gods including the one we believe is the one and only God. So they cant all be the same. They all contridict too much
Date: 5/25/2002 9:53:00 AM  From Authorid: 53326    LOL! good point blue, they did the same thing about poligomy (sp). As soon as they were told either give it us or they (being the majority of Utah) would never be allowed to enter the union (the US) they decided well i guess its ok to just have one wife. lol

Date: 5/25/2002 12:24:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    excellent answers! thank you....Osiris, you are of course correct, I liken it to Goddess/God is like an onion, with many layers, ultimately reaching the core, which would be truth. Hiya RorayBlue! You are correct of course, how ever Joseph Smith was in fact RE-TRANSLATING the bible, the beginning therefore can be found in the Words of Wisdom. Those of dark skin where forbidden to hold the Priesthood, because dark skin was a sign of God's displeasure, until divine revelation revealed, dark-skinned men COULD hold the priesthood. DaniDarlin & Pheduex...you are both correct also. There IS no correct answer. Every faith hold some aspect of what could be the truth. Thank you both for replying to my post......
Date: 5/25/2002 12:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    Hiya Ali & Sunshine2004.....glad you guys came & commented. Osiris has indeed spoken great words on this subject. Sunshine, not to bash our LDS friends, but LDS scripture has changed many, many times in the short time it has been a religion. Pologamy is just one reversal. Thank you for your comments
