Four presuppositions which are necessary BEFORE reading/understanding scripture.

1) THE TRUE CANON OF SCRIPTURE HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED. The boundary of Scripture must be determined before one interprets it. If that has not been done then exegesis is either inaccurate or incomplete.

2)THE TEXT WE HAVE IS RELIABLE AND CAN BE ADEQUATELY TRANSLATED AND UNDERSTOOD. One must assume there is a God, and that since He had the power to create the universe He surely has the ability to work miraculously and providentially so that we know what we are supposed to do.

3) THE TEXT WE HAVE IS INSPIRED (GOD-BREATHED). It is not the product of man alone, but a combination of God using the writer's style, vocabulary, and knowledge to form a text that is accurate down to the word of what God wants. If it is not we are wasting our time.

4) A SINNER CAN UNDERSTAND THE SCRIPTURES. God does not have to "touch" someone before they can understand Scripture. If that was the case, no-one could "read" themselves out of the darkness. The Bible must be the agency which one uses to interact and be "touched" by God.

Jn:14:17: Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.UNTIL they do come to Jesus they can not know the things of the spirit.

Date: 5/20/2002 8:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    good post, Parnoid. However, I would be remiss if I did not point out, that the intrepretation of scripture would depend upon the reader, and the context in which the scripture was written. I would venture to guess, that not every follower of Christ (ie: Christian) would believe the Bible to be infallible & the Word of God, from God's own mouth. As far as a "Sinner" goes, being born-in-sin seems somewhat exclusive to the Juedo-Christian faith. This is a very good post, however. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
Date: 5/20/2002 9:02:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34476    Thanks LSG. This is, of course, strictly my opinion (which was summed up nicely by this writer) on what is necessary for one to be able to understand and learn from the scriptures
Date: 5/20/2002 9:04:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34476    FB, great to see ya! I believe we agree, but am not sure what you mean when you state "until they come to know Jesus they can not know the things of the spirit." Are you making reference to the Holy Spirit? Or a more generic "spirit of God" here?
Date: 5/20/2002 9:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    Holy Spirit of course. Good post.
Date: 5/20/2002 9:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    this is a good post, Paranoid....
Date: 5/20/2002 10:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    Great post Paranoid.. I would like to elaborate a little on the last paragraph.."A sinner can understand the scriptures".This would seem to be obvious.God calls the sinner through His Word.Since God,through His Word, instructs the sinner on what he must do to be saved then the sinner must first understand what he must do in order to be saved. ((hugs))
Date: 5/20/2002 10:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 37900    Good post, Paranoid! I believe it is crucial that everyone establish the assumptions he or she relies on, whatever the belief system. This writer has done a commendable job.
Date: 5/20/2002 10:53:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34476    Thanks for clarifying that, FB And thanks to all of you for taking the time to read this
Date: 5/21/2002 12:15:00 AM  From Authorid: 50435    Can we PLEEEEAAAAASSSSSEEEEEEE put this one in the debate category? LOL. Firstborn is on to something very cool, but due to the category this is in I can't follow up on it. I have something to add to her comment, for it, but I can't here out of respect for the author of the post. Take care and please consider reposting in debate...Gallytuck.
Date: 5/21/2002 10:33:00 AM  From Authorid: 16671    Galleytuck, I cant either, as I do have more to say on this, but it is in religion.
Date: 5/21/2002 11:55:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34476    Sry Gallytuck & Firstborn. I don't want to place anything in debate lately as I do not have the time to monitor it properly. Feel free to do so if you wish. Let me know if you do. I'll be able to respond there, just not as often as you may wish me to
Date: 5/21/2002 11:56:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34476    I also believe this is good advice for those wishing to earnestly study the Bible. If they have any of these doubts, then they need more study in OTHER areas before tackling the scriptures.
Date: 5/21/2002 2:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    LOL, but I know if I put anything more on this post, all debate would break loose, not so much with you, but with others. Hugs
Date: 5/21/2002 2:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    Thats ok, I'm not in the mood to debate today as you will see by my posts I put up, they are not in debate. Anyway it was no big deal, just a few more scriputres on man/woman and their understand of the word of God. Anyway, good post.
Date: 5/28/2002 7:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 53850    when some one READING something out from the bible,or preaching to those who want to listen or hear , that how GOD is calling out to you, because faith come
by hearing---Romans 10:17 Ro 10:17
As if the apostle had said, "It is very evident, and these testimonies show, that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the preaching of the word of God." The grace of faith is wrought by the Spirit in the act of hearing: and the matter heard by which this faith is wrought, is the word of God preached. Persons must hear, that they may believe; and God's word must be preached,

that they may hear. A non-preaching minister then is no minister; he is like a bell without a clapper, or a crier without a voice; he neither answers the design of his commission, nor the end of the gospel's institution, which was to be the instrumental mean of faith. Faith cometh by hearing. see that how GOD CALL OUT TO YOU,
BY HEARING<<<< IT ) Dean

Date: 5/28/2002 11:01:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34476    Romans 10:14-15 "How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!" Thot I'd add some previous verses, Dean
Date: 5/31/2002 4:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 53850    there is no WAY where anybody can INTERPRET the Bible, in k-j-v or A-S-V
and i did prove it to them, Just by Reading it, scripture for scripture and
verse to verse <<Dean )
