Opinions on Car Purchase Please.....(Hawk)

*****UPDATE*****

Today we bought a Red 2002 Dodge Caravan SE!

Now I feel really old buying a car like that, but I really love it and the kids do too! The best thing is I will have a car at home when my husband takes the other one to work. I won't be stranded anymore!!! We also got a $2500 rebate which they let us use as a downpaynet. And it's only 6.9% finance charges! Thank god for good credit! Thanks for the replies everyone!

******

My husband and I are currently looking at getting a second car. I've been researching the best type of mini-van to purchase on the net. (I know we must be getting old! LOL!)

If any of you own one, what kind and would you recommend? We're looking at price and durability. Looks count too!

I've researched some mini-vans on the internet. As far as looks there is a mini-van made by Kia that I think looks better than the rest of the min-vans I've looked at. However, we rented a Kia sedan a year ago and we did not like it at all. It had absolutely no pick up and didn't drive smooth at all. Anyone have one? Any complaints???

We're looking at 2002 models, but would consider purchasing older used models if they are still running good. Any mini van owners have an idea how long they run well before they start costing money to repair?

So, let me know if you own one or have heard any pros or cons from personal experience or from others.

Thanks!

Date: 5/15/2002 11:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 9130    Oh no! Not a MINIVAN!!!!! are you gonna be one of those crazy moms that drive the minivans like 90 mph in a 50 mph zone while yelling at your kids and talking on the cell phone? lol
Date: 5/15/2002 11:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 8941    I think that Consumer Reports has an online service that you can use to find the ratings, if that would help any. We don't have a minivan. Yup...consumerreports.org, but I don't know how far you can go without being a subscriber...
Date: 5/15/2002 11:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Well my sister owns one made plymouth or dodge I think....I drive a plymouth its a neon but I love the car and wouldn't trade it for the world. I have had it for almost 4 years now and I have never had a problem with it. My sister used to commute over 80 miles a day with her van and never had a problem with it and it was good on gas mileage too....In fact my car rocks with gas mileage..LOL
Date: 5/15/2002 11:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    hmmm well I know alot of people with like the windstars *are those considered mini vans or just vans?* LOL and everyone who has those love them....Kias...hmmm I haven't heard great things about the company, when i was in my accident and had to look for a new car I suggested looking at kia models and my dad and my uncle *a mechanic* Both flipped out on me...lol something about them being affordable but also made far too cheaply *shrugs* Good luck in your search sorry I wasn't much help!
Date: 5/15/2002 11:44:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    Oh, Dizzy! I never go over 80 mph and I have a hands free phone when I drive and yell at my kids...LOL! (Seriously! LOL!) LOL@Telsha! Thanks, SpitFire, I think I'll check that site out in the morning. Becky, those Kias are pretty cheap, maybe theres a reason??? Azairyia, I hope I find a car (mini-van) that rocks too! LOL! It's goona be hard lookin' cool in a mini-van...LOL!
Date: 5/15/2002 11:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 9130    why not get a station wagon :P
Date: 5/15/2002 11:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Well Hawk you might be able to figure yourgas mileage through mine....now how many miles I get per gallon I can't tell ya....but I pay $1.44 for regular unleaded gas...its costs me $14 to fill my tank and I can drive 400 miles on that tank no problem....it is 4 cylinders. I am not sure if a mini-van would have 6 or 8 cylinders but I still think the gas mileage would be good....LOL
Date: 5/15/2002 11:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 39258    yea!! a station wagon with wood paneling sides!!! DO IT!!
Date: 5/15/2002 11:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 27046    Hey we had a station wagon when I grew up....My mom doesn't drive a car unless it has a football field in front of it I swear....We called it the dirt mobile it was so old....LOL
Date: 5/16/2002 1:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 54174    LOL
Date: 5/16/2002 1:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 54174    my dad had a volvo.. that car ROCKED!! i always wished i could have it when i was old enough to drive but it was an older model and my dad messed up the steering and some other things and didnt go get it fixed. poor thing.
Date: 5/16/2002 2:27:00 AM  From Authorid: 53360    Seriuosly, you need to do some crash test rating research, althoguh you may not be going 80 talking on a cellphone, there is some idiots out there that do, and they may hit you. Looks arent everything, especailly when you have kids. If you are going to get a minivan make safety your #1 priority. BUT, whatever you do, DONOT get that ford aerostar, if they even still make it. my mom had one and she was continueously having to get it fixed. Good luck kOzzmic_K
Date: 5/16/2002 6:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 32070    I've never owned a mini van. Always had a pick up truck. Hey, you can get one of them. Then you get to help all your friends MOVE! :P..lol
Date: 5/16/2002 8:42:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    A station wagon? LOL! Ya want me to get a grocery get6ter?!! LOL!
Date: 5/16/2002 8:44:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    Thanks Kozzmic K! That's what I want to hear..the bad stuuf about certain cars so I don't get that kind. Okay, Ford Aerostar is out. Safety is a main thing too.
Date: 5/16/2002 11:41:00 AM  From Authorid: 54174    you should get a jeep, they're pretty roomy and they look nicer heehe = ) ~Mercedes
Date: 5/16/2002 12:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 277    Jeeps do look nicer, but they are top heavy. With two small children I wouldn't want to take a chance rolling it going around a curve. Plus, a mini-van would hold 7-8 people. Thanks though...
Date: 5/16/2002 1:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 53360    We had an older model Ford Explorer. its a 91 and the crash test rating for that year are great. Ofcourse you have to take corners lightly, but I think it is one of the safetst vehicles we have owned. I did get hit in it once(not my fault) and the only damage it caused was a dent in the bottom of the door. And I think that is an advantage of a bigger vehicle, you are higher up than most cars, and depending on the severity of the wreck your car will only suffer minimal damage. Now, my mom has a newer Explorer sport, which I do not like at all. They are too top heavy for me. kOzzmic_K
